Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann: You haven't seen The Last of Us
It has been 6 years since Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part II as a sequel to the 2022 hit game. While the PlayStation Studio hasn't confirmed a third game, The Washington Post's interview with Neil Druckmann, the studio head, has revealed that fans of the franchise will be thrust back into the universe in the future.
According to an excerpt from the interview, which focused on video game writing, Neil Druckmann is reported to have said that although he and the studio weren't involved in the creative direction in the upcoming third and final season of HBO TV series based on the game,“....Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP, and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with ‘The Last of Us.” Druckmann then added that “There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”
The reveal is as cryptic as it is exciting, considering Naughty Dog's focus is on its upcoming video game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It is not clear what these projects are, but while many people's obvious guess may be a new game, the fact that the statement mentions more than one project, hints it might not be limited to just that.
In 2013, there was a four-issue comic book miniseries that served as a prequel to the first game, while a tabletop role-playing game was released in 2024. There was supposed to be a feature film that would be produced by Sam Raimi, but it didn't get made, while an animated short film was canceled by Sony. Based on the above, its highly likely that a new game isn't the only way to return to the universe of The Last of Us.
Naughty Dog's upcoming game doesn't have a release date yet, but we don't expect a new The Last of Us title will arrive before it. However, if the other projects aren't games, then the return to the world of The Last of Us might be closer than we think.
With The Last of Us Day happening later this month (September 26), there's a possibility more details will be revealed then.
