Over a year has passed since Sightful introduced its first-generation Spacetop augmented reality (AR) product. In short, the company only offered the Spacetop through an early access program, which it subsequently released generally for $2,150 earlier this year. Now, Sightful has replaced the Spacetop with the more powerful but cheaper Spacetop G1, which it intends to launch later this year.
On the one hand, Sightful equips the new model with the Qualcomm Snapdragon QCS8550, a chipset that it complements with 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, 128 GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage and a 60 Wh battery. Reportedly, the latter supports 63 W charging over USB Type-C and is rated for up to 8 hours of usage between charges. For reference, while the Qualcomm Snapdragon QCS8550 should deliver better performance than the Snapdragon 865 inside the original Spacetop, it will fall short of the Snapdragon X Elite inside the likes of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11.
On the other hand, Sightful has redesigned the Spacetop too. As a result, the Spacetop G1 weighs 1.4 kg, 100 g less than its predecessor, while also offering a larger protective area for its bundled smart glasses. Incidentally, Sightful will bundle the Xreal Air 2 Pro (curr. $449 on Amazon), which launched last year with a pair of 1080p OLED panels that attempt to create up to 100-inch projections within the confines of having a 50° field of view (FoV) and 42 pixels per degree (PPD).
Ultimately, the image quality with the Spacetop G1 should be the same as using the Xreal Air 2 Pro with any other laptop. However, Sightful has attempted to harness the floating window UI of Meta Horizon OS and visionOS with SpaceOS, a proprietary operating system. Based on the limited FoV and PPD of the Xreal Air 2 Pro, it seems improbable that the Spacetop G1 will be capable of presenting multiple windows in the manner shown throughout Sightful's promotional videos. Currently, Sightful hopes to begin selling the Spacetop G1 for $1,900 this October and is already taking $100 reservations; the company has not confirmed pricing or availability for other markets yet, though.
