Xreal has unveiled its Project Aura glasses in participation with Google for the upcoming Android XR extended reality operating system. The glasses will be tethered to an external host powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR chipset.
Google has attempted to establish itself in the AR/VR/XR space for many years starting with Google Cardboard, which used a smartphone as the display and host, but other products such as the Meta Quest 3 series (sold here on Amazon) have remained more popular among gamers and virtual environment enthusiasts. Android XR is its latest attempt to create a stand-alone OS optimized for virtual reality use.
The Project Aura glasses look similar to the Xreal Air 2 Ultra, with dual 3D environmental sensors at the upper corners of the front frame. Aura adds what appears to be a camera above the nose bridge that can be used with Google Gemini AI and to take photos or videos.
The Air 2 Ultra can project up to a 385-inch virtual screen using dual Sony 0.68-inch 1080p micro-OLED displays with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness, so the Project Aura glasses will likely have similar specifications.
Xreal will release further information at Augmented World Expo (AWE) in June, but neither Xreal nor Google has released a definitive date for the launch of Android XR.
