Sony to supplement PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Slim with PS5 Pro models this year from $499
A few months have passed since Sony announced its modular PlayStation 5 (PS5), commonly referred to as the PS5 Slim (curr. $499.99 on Amazon). However, rumours about the company releasing a PS5 Pro preceded those relating to a PS5 Slim, although the former still remains unofficial. Nonetheless, Moore's Law is Dead (MLID), a well-known leaker for all things GPU related, has now commented on launch pricing for the long-rumoured PS5 Pro.
According to MLID, Sony plans to offer the PS5 Pro in two variants like the original model. Thus, not only will there be a PS5 Pro, but there will also be a PS5 Pro Digital Edition, a cheaper option because of its missing disk drive. Supposedly, the latter will retail for $499, which would make it $50 more expensive than the current PS5 Slim. Unfortunately, there is no word yet on the price of the regular PS5 Pro.
For now, all PS5 Pro variants are expected to adopt an APU with a 4 nm manufacturing process, 2 nm narrower than the 6 nm alternative that powers the PS5 Slim. As such, the PS5 Pro will provide increased CPU clock speeds as well, albeit while maintaining 8 CPU cores built around AMD's Zen 2 architecture. Elsewhere, the PS5 Pro is rumoured to receive an RDNA 2-derived GPU that houses 56 Compute Units (CUs), plus 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM clocked at 18 Gbps with a 256-bit bus to deliver 576 GB/s memory bandwidth. Reportedly, the PS5 Pro will arrive in Q4 2024, presumably in time for Christmas 2024 shipments.
