Officially, Sony has said very little about its next Xperia smartphones. However, various leaks have occurred in the last few days about both the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI. Now, Sony itself is getting in on the act by hinting at several upgrades headed to the Xperia 1 line compared to last year's Xperia 1 V (curr. $858 on Amazon).
Initially, the company offered a brief look at the telephoto camera that is set to grace the Xperia 1 VI. Based on pre-release leaks, Sony has installed a new telephoto system that can zoom seamlessly from 85 mm to 170 mm equivalent focal lengths, or up to roughly 7x optical zoom. While Sony has not confirmed the extent of its telephoto upgrades yet, it has suggested that the Xperia 1 VI surpasses its predecessor's peak 125 mm equivalent focal length.
Subsequently, Sony has implied that the Xperia 1 VI borrows display technology from its Bravia Smart TV line. Although Sony does not acknowledge as much, the background image of the unnamed Xperia smartphone matches the equivalent for the new Bravia 9. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen how Sony will align the two devices yet. Nonetheless, previous leaks suggest that the Xperia 1 VI will line up on May 15 with a 120 Hz OLED display, albeit with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio instead of Sony's infamous 21:9 alternative.
