Samsung's newest high-end image sensor is the 108MP ISOCELL HM2, which improves on the HMX found in the new Mi 11 in that its pixels are of 0.7 microns (μm) in size rather than 0.8μm, for a start. However, the tipster Ice Universe has hinted that their maker will have something even better to offer smartphone brands in 2021.
This, apparently, is an as-yet unnamed ISOCELL sensor of no less than 200MP in size. The leaker claims that it will launch "soon", although this may not mean it will appear in any of the upcoming phones slated for an imminent launch. Nevertheless, it might enable OEMs to hype late-2021 or 2022 releases with this new ground-breaking spec.
Then again, Ice Universe's new Twitter post on this subject does not include further details, such as additional specs, for the alleged new top-flight smartphone camera. Furthermore, Samsung has also become linked to a 250MP sensor that might also become the best in the industry soon.
It is projected to be exactly 1 inch in size, whereas mobile CMOS has typically had to be a fraction of the same unit (for example, the HMX is 1/1.33 inches, as is the newer HM1) up until now.
This may enable the putative 250MP successor to capture more light and, thus, reproduce more detail. Therefore, breaking the 108MP barrier could have a lot of advantages for the premium phones of the near future.
