Like a lot of larger laptops, the Series 7 Chronos is an awkward trade-off between power and portability. At £1,100 the Series 7 is an expensive laptop that is not portable or powerful enough. It didn't perform as well as the Novatech nSpire 2760, which is faster and cheaper at around £800, although that laptop is even heavier, has a lower resolution screen and a smaller hard disk.

At a shade under a grand, the 700Z is well worth a look. If you’re after a decent-looking, lightweight 15-incher, the next best place to looks is the likes of Apple’s 15in MacBook Pro, for which you’ll pay nearly £600 more, and which comes with less RAM and a smaller hard disk. Aside from the over-ambitious trackpad, there’s an awful lot to like here.

Attack on the gaming elite. Alienware and Asus have to watch out: Samsung presents a serious opponent for the gaming leaders, M17x and G74SX, called 700G7A. In addition to high-end components (Radeon HD 6970M) and good equipment (Blu-Ray drive), the 17 inch laptop has an illuminated keyboard. So, nothing can go wrong, or?

It's a hefty machine able to handle the most-demanding games and media applications, but where it really excels in its display. Samsung makes great LCD panels, and 700G showcases their quality, with a clear, bright display and with the power needed to deliver the media performance that will show off the display. 3D is the cherry on the top.

The powerful, quiet and well-equipped Samsung Series 7 NP700G7A is an excellent laptop for gamers. However, we recommend you only use the 3D mode for watching 3D Blu-ray movies and stick to gaming in 2D with the graphics detail up high. While the AlienWare M17x-R3 is still a cut above, it's also a fair bit more expensive than this Samsung model.

Gaming notebooks are generally not cheap, with most models starting well above S$3000. For top of the line units, with similar specs and entertainment capabilities, expect to pay up to S$5000+. Bearing that in mind, we were pleasantly surprised to see Samsung price the 700G7A at a very modest S$2899. Best of all, you’re not sacrificing performance at that price.

The Chronos is only capable of handling the latest games at reduced resolutions, but for the price 700Z Chronos is a very good-looking lightweight 15-incher, and it stands up well in benchmarks to Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro, which costs around $600 more despite offering a smaller hard drive and less RAM.

Benchmark scores, of course, are not the only consideration you should make when buying a notebook. (If they were, it would be a very tough choice among these three comparable machines.) You should also consider screen quality, sound quality, keyboard comfort, and other tangibles.

Great battery life, WiMAX and WiDi 2.0 wireless features, and a powerful CPU and GPU tag team are what make the Samsung NP700Z5B-W01UB a great laptop. But, because of its superior graphics processor, good battery life, overall solid performance, and amazing typing experience, the Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) remains the Editors' Choice for the desktop replacement category. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a lovely laptop. The high-resolution screen, good keyboard and stylish design, lifting it above the run of the mill. It’ll suit MacBook Pro fans looking for a Windows alternative, and Windows fans after a stylish, capable machine. It really is a shame you can’t get to the battery.

At £1,100 the Series 7 is an expensive laptop that is not portable or powerful enough. It didn't perform as well as the Novatech nSpire 2760, which is faster and cheaper at around £800, although that laptop is even heavier, has a lower resolution screen and a smaller hard disk. While on the whole this is a well-built and fast laptop, it doesn't quite justify the price.

The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a great notebook that offers a lot of the kinds of thing I tend to harp on about, such as a big screen, a full keyboard, USB 3.0 ports and a multi-touch trackpad. With so many competitively priced notebooks around, you might baulk at paying close to a grand for a product that is not particularly thin or light, but it looks well designed, is well thought-out and well built. It is also extremely comfortable to use – and surely this is the critical buying factor for a general-purpose notebook.

With the Series 7 Chronos, Samsung has turned its talents to making a commoditised version of the Apple MacBook Pro. It has much of the same technology inside, and borrows heavily in certain design cues, but using cheaper materials to allow a lower price. Where the entry-level 15in MacBook Pro costs a handsome £1549, the Samsung can be had for £900. The screen is in some ways better (unless you specifically order an anti-glare for the Mac, at an extra £120) although build quality and ease of use trail some way behind the MacBook.

Samsung's Series 7 Chronos is a good, but not great laptop. It's got lengthy battery life and provides quite the hardware punch for a reasonable, if not bargain price. It's graced with restrained good looks, and has a lot of the features we love in a laptop, but its build quality lags behind (relatively) similarly specced offerings from Dell and Apple.

Samsung’s sleek, metal-clad 15.6in Chronos laptop is the most impressive MacBook Pro rival we’ve yet seen, offering a lighter machine with better specs for nearly half the price, even if it’s not quite as attractive or well-built. A quad-core Core i7 CPU, innovative SSD and HDD hybrid storage, discrete gaming-capable graphics and a matt, high resolution screen are but some of the highlights of this portable powerhouse. And with good ergonomics and battery life thrown in, we have no hesitation in giving it our wholehearted recommendation.

I'm a sucker for skinny chassis with slot-loading optical drives. The Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list) laptop combines an elegantly slim (under one inch thick) aluminum case with slot-loading DVD±RW drive; sunny 15.6-inch screen and backlit keyboard; quad-core Intel Core i7 power; 8GB of RAM; and a roomy 750GB hard drive yoked to a small solid-state drive or 8GB of cache storage to boost boot and application loading times—all in a package about as light as desktop replacements get, 5.2 pounds.

Overall, the Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a very attractive machine. Unfortunately, looks can take you only so far, in laptops and in life. When it’s time to shop for a new laptop, everybody wants an ultrabook. But few remain quite so excited when they see the often-limited performance and inflated price tags. Samsung’s solution: Jam a standard, 14-inch laptop into what is essentially an ultrabook case, giving you (in theory) the best of both worlds.

Is the Chronos a truly premium notebook? On the one hand it has a great screen, low weight and an admirable set of hardware. On the other hand, the touchpad positioning and considerable use of plastic take a lot of the shine off. There’s stiff competition in the premium notebook market segment and while the Chronos makes a valiant effort, it’s just not quite there yet.

There's no doubt in our minds that the Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a good laptop. The problem is, it could have been great. If only it had a touchpad with better accuracy and responsiveness, and perhaps a screen with wider viewing angles. Apart from those issues, we like the design of this notebook; its keyboard and battery life are excellent and its feature-set (including the slot-loading DVD drive) is useful.

Well-rounded ultrabook. Long battery runtimes, a matt screen and high performance - it almost looks as if Samsung has made the dream of a perfect mobile companion come true. But is the notebook for over €1000 really as perfect as it seems?

We’re able to appreciate the laptop’s incredible hardware in spite of its design shortcomings. This isn’t just a gaming machine; it’s also a portable workstation, a multi-media powerhouse, and a capable desktop replacement. The Samsung Series 7 Gamer is the only computer you’d ever need. Portability excluded, of course.

However, if what you need is a powerful system for home that you can put away at the end of the day, or a portable gaming and entertainment centre, this has got everything going for it, even the price. It is very expensive, but with the equivalent Alienware machine costing around £500 more, £1,430 suddenly seems much more reasonable.

The Samsung Series 7 Gamer is a good laptop that could have - and should have - been great, but ultimately it doesn't do quite enough to justify its steep price tag.

The Samsung Series 7 Chronos offers plenty of power and value. For $1,100 you get the same specs as the 15" MacBook Pro with Apple's resolution upgrade for nearly half the price. In fact, we prefer the Chronos' keyboard backlighting and Windows optimized software (for those of you who are looking for Windows rather than Mac OS X). The Samsung is a bit lighter than the competitors and it's quite thin and highly portable. Battery life is very good, the fan is quiet and the keyboard is top notch once you get used to the offset design. But the TN panel, though bright and matte, just doesn't hold a candle to the MacBook Pro, Dell XPS 15z with the 1080p WLED option or the late 2011 HP Envy 15 with its IPS display. Viewing angles, particularly top-bottom are poor and contrast can't match these competitors.

From a purely processor to pennies perspective, the Series 7 Gamer is worth the money. Its a gaming machine capable of playing the latest titles at respectable settings. With all its case lights and fancy UI, its a bit like a party guest who arrives overdressed. You're glad they showed up, but the bow tie they're wearing just makes them look silly.

We're thrilled that the Samsung comes with a whopping 1.5TB of storage, but are a bit disappointed that the company chose to include bloatware on the drive. Granted, it's limited to WildTangent games and trial versions of CyberLink Media Show 5 and Norton Internet Security and Online Backup, but most gaming notebooks eschew this sort of software.

Samsung's entry into the gaming specific world of mobile computing with the Series 7 Gamer certainly offers a premium experience with a corresponding $1900 price tag. Performance is excellent thanks to the core i7 processor, 16GB of memory and GeForce GTX 675M graphics. In addition to this, Samsung packs in lots of storage features with 1.5TB of storage space and a Blu-ray drive.

Samsung carefully ascribed the "Gamer" moniker to its latest piece of kit, knowing full well that a failure to deliver would incur the ridicule of a particularly knowledgeable and opinionated customer group. Good thing, then, that the Series 7 Gamer lives up to its handle. Despite our minor gripes, we can't deny its screaming performance.

Overall, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer lives up to its name. Its gorgeous display, adjustable power settings, terrific keyboard/touchpad combination, and WiDi feature all combine to make for a versatile system. And while its raw processing power ultimately falls somewhat short of the Alienware M18X, this fact is tempered considerably by its otherwise strong performance and, more importantly, its reasonable price tag.

There has been a small flood of big-screened gaming mega laptops recently, timed to coincide with the release of Nvidia's latest graphics and Intel's newest processors. The Samsung Series 7 Gamer is huge, expensive, and unattractive, but it's also one of the best gaming laptops that we've seen this year. If you don't mind its beefy 17-inch form, you won’t be disappointed.

Samsung's Series 7 Gamer takes a new third-gen Ivy Bridge processor, updated NVIDIA graphics and a beautiful 17.3-inch full HD display and makes one powerful gaming laptop. While not only for gaming, this laptop is a definite desktop replacement powerhouse that delivers the best performance we've seen from a laptop, earning it a rare perfect score in our books.

With record-breaking speed, a superb display and excellent keyboard, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer is one of the best gaming laptops to hit our labs. Games ran smoothly even at their highest settings and videos and Web pages looked spectacular on the full HD display. And let's not forget the Gamer's impressive audio. The only drawback that prevents this notebook from being an Editors' Choice pick is the heat it generates. But if it's raw power and a gorgeous screen you're after, the Samsung Series 7 Gamer is a compelling choice.

We have yet to see any officially branded 17-inch ultrabooks, but I suspect the Samsung Series 7 Chronos 700Z7CH would be an excellent approximation of one. At first glance, at least, this thin desktop replacement seems like it has everything going for it. For the second straight laptop review, what started out as a system with a lot of promise ends up falling short of my expectations. For many users, the Samsung Series 7 will work very well, but enthusiasts or other folks that tend to push their hardware to its limits may end up less impressed. Let’s start with the good though, as there are many areas where Samsung gets things right.

In a world of 17.3-inch bruisers and juggernauts, the Samsung Series 7 Chronos stands out. It's not exactly a 17.3-inch-screened ultrabook, but it's as reasonably close to one as we're likely to see. It offers an impressive blend of desktop-replacement performance in a remarkably slim and stylish chassis. Its Core i7 processor provides all the horsepower you'll need, whether you're encoding audio and video files, running office productivity tasks, or just kicking back to watch a movie on the spacious screen.

The latest revision of the Samsung Series 7 aims to make the system more affordable but also has the disadvantage of just not offering the same level of 3D performance as its predecessor or its competition has. It makes up for this by having a bit better level of storage performance and a greater amount of storage space along with a Blu-ray compatible drive. The result is a more general purpose 17-inch laptop than a gaming specific model.

Beacon of hope. The Series 7 Chronos 770Z7E definitely belongs to the most exciting and most awaited multimedia laptops of 2013. The main attraction is - depending on the view - either the slim metal chassis or the integrated 28 nm GPU. AMD's Radeon HD 8870M competes with Nvidia's powerful Kepler architecture. We took a detailed look at the 17-incher.

Samsung’s put together a cracking desktop replacement in the Series 7 Chronos. If you can find an extra £400 in your budget, there’s no question that Apple’s Macbook Pro with Retina display is the classier all-round package, but the Samsung still has plenty going for it. It, too, blends power with an attractive design. Considering the superb Full HD touchscreen, it’s the most refined Windows 8 desktop replacement we’ve seen so far in 2013.

With a high-end quad-core processor, discrete graphics and one of the best keyboards available on the market the Chronos 7 is the Windows 8 laptop of choice if money isn't a problem. The pixel density may not be as high as the MacBook Pro, but it's £400 cheaper.

A book for the road. Samsung's 13.3-inch Ultrabook features a 3rd-generation i5 CPU with integrated graphics, a 128 GB SSD, and a Full-HD touchscreen. How well the sleek-looking Ultrabook with previous-generation hardware compares to its competition is the subject of our review.

Finally, an ultrabook that can rival the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A and Apple MacBook Air. The Samsung Series 7 Ultra has processing power, battery life, a quality screen, beautiful finish and tons of connectivity. That said, they shouldn't have even bothered with the touchscreen, because it doesn't add much to the user experience—all it does is add to the price and drag down the battery life. Otherwise, this is definitely a keeper!

The Samsung Series 7 Ultra is an easy Ultrabook to recommend. It has excellent build quality and materials, an attractive aluminum casing that resists fingerprints and a superb 1080p touch screen. The Samsung Series 5 is an attractive and more affordable model, but the display can't compare and most ship with slower conventional HDDs.

Workhorse. The 730U3E ultrabook is a new member of Samsung's Series 7 Ultra family. A first-rate metal casing, swift hardware, a matte Full HD IPS screen and agreeable input devices are its initial key specs. We tested the model featuring 256 GB flash memory for 1349 Euros (~$1761, RRP).

The Samsung is a little pricier than several of its nearest competitors, not to mention a fair bit heavier, but this classy Ultrabook has the goods it where it counts. With a stunning touchscreen, best-in-class graphics performance and a long-lasting battery, it’s easy to forgive the Series 7 Ultra’s minor flaws. Those after the lightest possible Ultrabook would do well to consider Sony’s featherweight VAIO Pro 13 instead, but if you can live with a few extra grams in your bag, the Series 7 Ultra is a delight.

Samsung 780Z5E-S01UB
Many people dream of slim and robust notebooks and Samsung offers such. With the Samsung 780Z5E-S01UB, Samsung claims to take notebooks to the next level. With Windows 8, this laptop is prepared to provide reliable performance in a sleek and thin design. It looks good and delivers superior performance in an aluminum unibody. Undoubtedly, the build quality of Samsung Series 7 Chronos is top-notch. This laptop comes with a 15,5 inch fullHD (1920 x 1080 pixels) 10-point touchscreen. The high visual quality is not only optimal for multimedia, but also for gaming. The JBL stereo speakers with virtual woofer and sound effects together with the stunning display provide for best user experience. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor and an AMD Radeon graphics card, which provide processing power for professional users. Despite being equipped with high end innards, Samsung claims a battery life of up to 11 hours.
The only downside of this laptop is that it is quite heavy with 2.4 kg. So, mobility is low, but the performance is high. Otherwise it is a great laptop and this time Samsung did almost everything right. The laptop has a high-end build quality, a touchscreen, a high-quality display, powerful innards and an excellent battery life. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a worthy option for users looking for powerful and robust, yet beautiful laptops.

The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is one of the best Windows laptops money can buy, but in this changing world of computing, we urge you as a buyer to consider whether your needs would be served better with a lighter, more mobile machine with less emphasis on huge power. If you're looking for a fantastic laptop today, however, this superb machine comes highly recommended.

The Samsung Series 7 Chronos is a worthy update to last year’s recommended model. It keeps the top-notch construction, and brings every other aspect of the laptop right into 2013. It has a great touchscreen, a high-quality display, powerful innards and impressive battery life given the power on tap. It’s not a laptop to buy if you want something to take around with you day-in, day-out as it’s just too heavy. But as a semi-portable desktop-replacer, it’s top-notch.

Samsung Ultra Touch 740U3E-S02DE
The Samsung Series 7 family consists of high performance mobile computing solutions. The Samsung Ultra Touch 740U3E-S02DE is one of the newer models and a real luxury model. It sports a brushed aluminum chassis, which looks and feels great. Its portability is good with a weight of 1.65 kg.
Sporting a 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor and up to 6 GB DDR3 RAM, the laptop delivers top performance for its class and runs most demanding applications without problems. The intelligent Intel Turbo Boost technology adapts the clock rate to the load and provides a seamless user experience. The laptop features a dedicated AMD Radeon 8570M graphic card for rich multimedia and gaming experience. The 13.3 inch LED display has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. In addition, it is touch sensitive and touch inputs work well under Windows 8.
The high performance does not have a negative impact on the battery life. But, the battery is not removable when the battery lifetime ends. Another downside is the lack of an optical drive. But, this allowed a lighter and thinner design of the laptop. Overall, the Samsung Ultra Touch 740U3E-S02DE is not cheap, the competition delivers less performance for the same price.

The more the better! Samsung packs the Series 7 flagship in an aluminum housing and equips it with a powerful Core i7, a dedicated AMD graphics card, a large SSD and a multi-touch Full HD IPS display. A bit over the top? We have thoroughly tested this good piece of hardware for you…

We think there are two compelling reasons to buy the Samsung Series 7 Ultra: the first is the Full HD screen and the second is the extra graphics support from AMD. This is what really sets this Ultrabook apart from the pack, but it's also responsible for the premium price point. However, if it's portability you value over everything else, we think you're better off looking elsewhere. While the Series 7 Ultra doesn't have an issue with power, it does have a slight weight problem.

While the Series 7 is a great Ultrabook, and one of the best we’ve seen, its hardware is flagging in comparison to Apple’s latest MacBook. The screen, though, is magnificent, and deserves the sort of round-the-block queues usually reserved for Cupertino’s latest. That alone isn’t enough, though, and for now the MacBook Air is safe at the top of our laptops Top 10.

It’s pretty hard to find fault with the Samsung Series 7 Ultra NP740U3E. Samsung 770Z5E-S01P
The Samsung 770Z5E-S01P is a robust laptop with a slim profile and quality hardware. Design is kept simple and the entire device is themed with a silver brush metal finish. Some may consider the overall weight to be a touch heavy at 2.4 kg, but the solid build quality feels premium to the touch. Display is a 15.6 inch Full HD panel with superb colors and clarity. Its touch screen capability seems somewhat an afterthought due to the lack of precision. The Samsung 770Z5E-S01P runs on Windows 8 with the option to upgrade to Windows 10. Hardware on the device comes in the form of an Intel Core i7-3635QM quad-core processor at 2.4 GHz, 8 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, an AMD Radeon HD 9970M GPU with 2 GB of GDDR5 VRAM and a 1 TB HDD. Audio quality is acceptable with the stereo setup and compliments the device as an overall multimedia platform. Other features found on the Samsung 770Z5E-S01P are Bluetooth, an HDMI out, a USB 2.0 port and an Ethernet port. Samsung could have definitely included more features for the price but the device makes up for this by sporting a large capacity Lithium Polymer battery with up to 8 hours of usage.Specifications

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

1.46 kg:
4.1 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
84.6%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
