On the whole, the Samsung Series 7 Chronos performed almost as well as the last 15-inch MacBook Pro we tested (2011). Plus, it sells at a lower price. It has a good finish, powerful components (processor and graphics card), a matte screen and a decent battery life for a laptop this size.

I'm a sucker for skinny chassis with slot-loading optical drives. The Samsung Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03) ($1,299 list) laptop combines an elegantly slim (under one inch thick) aluminum case with slot-loading DVD±RW drive; sunny 15.6-inch screen and backlit keyboard; quad-core Intel Core i7 power; 8GB of RAM; and a roomy 750GB hard drive yoked to a small solid-state drive or 8GB of cache storage to boost boot and application loading times—all in a package about as light as desktop replacements get, 5.2 pounds.

Overall the Samsung Series 7 is an impressive notebook. It looks good, it feels good and it has had some considerate control tweaks from Samsung. You might consider it a copycat design, but you'll save yourself about £500 over a similar Apple machine, with this 700Z coming in at around £1000.

Users who want the smoothest integration of hardware and software on the market will forsake Windows for the MacBook Pro 15-inch, while those who balk at the Series 7 (NP700Z5A-S03)'s price can check out its Samsung NP700Z5B-W01UB sibling (which subtracts 2GB of RAM, the backlit keyboard, and the solid-state cache and substitutes a tamer graphics chip). But if you're looking for a deftly engineered desktop replacement that combines cutting-edge tech with style and class, definitely check out our newest Editors' Choice.

The Samsung Series 7 laptop is going to be easily confused as being a MacBook Pro 15 clone. It shares many similarly features and appearances but it will retail for hundreds less at $1299. The base display and graphics are a step above the competition and it offers a few unique items such as the ExressCache function.

Samsung's new addition to the Series 7 line of laptops is evidently hoping to get all up in the face of Apple's MacBook Pro. The sleek, aluminium design brings to mind Apple's offspring and similar specs are on offer. Samsung's Series 7 700Z5A looks set to tackle Apple's MacBook Pro with its sleek aluminium styling, powerful specs and much cheaper price tag.

AMD Radeon HD 6750M:
Essentially a renamed Radeon HD 6650M but with faster GDDR5 memory.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2675QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
15.60":
15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
