When it comes to rollable display smartphones, LG’s unreleased LG Rollable comes to mind. But Samsung has also been working on similar designs for quite some time, and now, they may be inching closer to becoming real consumer phones.

Samsung has had rollable displays somewhere in its pipeline for years with no real device in the market yet. All that preparation and development could finally be materializing into an actual consumer smartphone, and a new report has hinted at when it could launch.

The information comes from a Korean publication citing a Samsung Electronics official. It says that the official confirmed a rollable phone in development with a launch timeline of the first half of 2028. This phone will use a display developed by Samsung Display, which would allow the company to capitalize on the new market. Samsung Display has reportedly started discussions with Samsung Electronics about supplying rollable display panels.

The phone is said to be called the Galaxy Z Slide, which suggests Samsung will not be coming up with a new series for this form factor. Furthermore, research firm Omdia reportedly predicts that this Galaxy Z Slide will feature a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 440.6 ppi pixel density. It also states that a successor will launch as soon as 2030.

We’ve seen a few Samsung patents in the past for rollable displays. A recent discovery showed drawings for a rollable screen smartphone that had the camera module on the extending side of the phone. Whether the Galaxy Z Slide will have the same design or a different one, only time will tell.

That said, fitting a 10-inch screen in this form factor would be quite challenging in order to maintain an ergonomic form factor. Bi-fold phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (buy on Amazon) have been able to reach 8 inches of screen real estate, and only the Huawei Mate XT tri-fold reaches 10.2 inches. With the recent patent, moving the camera module to the extending side could allow for more space for the rolled display.
