Samsung’s sliding/rollable phone could have a unique camera design for slimmer profile

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a rollable/sliding phone from Samsung, but it’s hard to say what stage of development it is in. It could even just be an idea for now, and Samsung may never release it to the public. That said, a newly discovered patent has hinted at what the phone might look like, and it seems to be doing something interesting and unique with the cameras.
Spotted by Wearview and xleaks7, the patent is dated May 5, 2026, but was originally filed on June 2, 2023. It shows drawings of a sliding phone that extends to the left, but what’s interesting is that the rear cameras move with the sliding display. With this design, Samsung seems to want to put the cameras on the sliding part of the phone, possibly for a slimmer overall profile. The patent shows a normal-looking bar phone from the back, but with a cutout for two cameras.
This design would allow the phone to be slimmer as the camera modules don’t have to sit on top of the rollable display, but are instead placed on the side, with a possible cutout. With such sliding or extending displays, the screen rolls and unrolls within the body of the phone, but there’s another way to execute this – the unreleased LG Rollable. That phone had the cameras vertically oriented along the edge of the stationary side. It also had the screen extended to the back, which would come to the front as the phone slid open.
That’s about all the information available in the Samsung patent. Based on the patent, xleaks7 has provided concept images to give an idea of how the actual phone could look.

This isn’t the first patent for a sliding/ rolling display smartphone from the Korean giant. Back in April of last year, another patent was spotted, and it showed a smaller Galaxy Z Flip-style device that, instead of flipping open, slid open. More recently, a credible leaker stated that Samsung is prototyping a sliding phone. Whether these designs will ever become real phones, only time will tell, but Samsung is definitely interested in this concept.
