Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: New rumour points to thicker and heavier foldable with S Pen slot and improved cameras
Foldable smartphones have gotten lighter and thinner in the last few years, with the Oppo Find N2 setting new standards in this regard. However, a new rumour circulated by ThePixel suggests the opposite could be the case for this year's Galaxy Z Fold5. As always, we would recommend treating unsubstantiated rumours with caution, particularly considering that Samsung's next Galaxy Z Fold is not expected to launch for another 7 months or so.
Allegedly, Galaxy Z Fold5 prototypes are 6.5 mm thick, an increase of 0.2 mm from the Galaxy Z Fold4. ThePixel reports a minor weight increase too, with a 4.5% uplift from current retail models. Supposedly, the 0.2 mm thicker chassis is to accommodate an S Pen, which would explain the 12 g weight change. ThePixel asserts that Samsung may also have upped the device's weight because of a change in camera sensors. The website insists that the Galaxy Z Fold5 will contain 'extremely large sensors', implying that Samsung has made some improvements in this regard. ThePixel has not provided camera sensor specifics yet, but Samsung may continue to borrow rear-facing cameras from the Galaxy S series, as it did last year by equipping the Galaxy Z Fold4 with the same rear-facing cameras as the Galaxy S22 Plus.
Currently, the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are rumoured to re-use their predecessors' cameras, so Samsung may have to look elsewhere within the Galaxy S series for 'extremely large sensors'. Seemingly, that would only leave the Galaxy S22 Ultra or Galaxy S23 Ultra, which have 108 MP and 200 MP primary cameras, respectively. In short, Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy Z series in line with Galaxy S Ultra smartphones, which now ship with an S Pen. ThePixel adds that the prototype relies on the Snapdragon 985 5G, an announced chipset that the website believes is 'strangely named'. Presumably, the Galaxy Z Fold5 will actually rely on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or a version of it, such as the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2.
