Samsung ATIV Book 9 Series

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Series consists of high-end ultrabooks. It was released in 2013 as successor of the Samsung Series 9 laptops. The models feature up to an Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM. Depending on the model, the integrated Intel HD Graphics or one of AMD’s latest graphics cards is used. In addition, there are a few SSD size options. The laptops either feature a 13.3 inch touchscreen with resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels or even a bright and contrast-rich Quad HD screen. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Series models belonged to the first ultrabooks which supported Microsoft Windows 8’s touch functionality from the start. However, there is also option to choose a non-touch screen.
The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Series has either Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64 bit or Windows 10 pre-installed. Thus, there is no installation needed upon purchasing. Starting from 2.6 pounds (1.17 kg), the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Series models belonged to the lightest laptops at that time. The laptop is also quite thin at only 0.5 inch (1.27 cm). For wireless connectivity, it has WiFi and Bluetooth built in. As for input/output ports, it features two USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort and an SD card reader.

The $1,399 Samsung ATIV Book 9 maintains the svelte dimensions of its predecessor and adds a 1080p display and a more powerful processor. Samsung's SideSync technology enables integration between Samsung PCs and Android devices for relatively seamless productivity. What prevents this Ultrabook from earning a higher rating are its below-average battery life and warm temperatures.

Ultraslim - the AMD way. Samsung's rather expensive ATIV Book 9 Plus was released some time ago and has been called the "most beautiful Ultrabook" by some. The ATIV Book 9 Lite uses AMD components and is offered at a more palatable price point. What the new notebook has to offer is the subject of our review.

The ATIV Book 9 Lite sounded like a good idea. In fact, the sales pitch was remarkably straightforward: Here's a machine that looks generally like the high-end ATIV Book 9 Plus, but costs a lot less. The problem is, the Book 9 Lite ultimately rests too much on its good looks. Take away the skinny chassis and you're left with a machine that offers sluggish performance and short battery life.

In Samsung-speak, all of the company's Windows 8 devices are now called "Ativ". The Samsung Series 9 must be rolling in its grave. The performance from the Ativ Book 9 Lite's AMD A6 processor harks back to another era. The screen is irredeemably bad, as are the speakers. If you run into this laptop, keep walking.

We loved the price and the (almost) faithful design to the Series 9 range. The chassis is super-thin and extremely stylish, as long as you look past the redesigned lid. Overall it's a good-looking machine and at face value it knocks the socks off the competition in terms of aesthetics. Our list of disappointments reads like a naughty schoolboy's report card. The blurry, poor-resolution screen, the plastic lid, the poor benchmark scores, and the own-brand chip all make for sorry reading. Some of these negatives are simply down to cost-cutting measures, and it's important to remember that this Samsung model exists for those on a budget. But you only have to look as far as the Asus Zenbook S200 or the VivoBook S400 for an altogether more impressive low-cost machine.

Provided you can tolerate and average screen, this is a great buy. For the money the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite is a smart, stylish and practical laptop with very good battery life. It's not a speed demon and is no good for games, but you won't find many laptops as light and portable and a good at this price. We do recommend you buy the non-touchscreen version, though. It's £100 cheaper, a bit lighter and is identical in every other way.

Windows 8 laptops with touch are everywhere, but don't tell the Samsung Ativ Book 9. This laptop doesn't seem to have gotten the memo. Formerly the Samsung Series 9, the rebranded Ativ Book 9 got little more than a change in name; the laptop feels dated, as it lacks a touch screen and the benefits of newer Intel processors.

Samsung ATIV 940X3G-K03DE
The latest in the Samsung Ativ Book 9 line, the Samsung 940X3G-K01DE is built to represent the pinnacle of Ultrabook glory. Its focus is on high-end design, quality materials and high-end performance, and it has a price to match. The sleek metal casing comes in gun-metal grey. A plastic wrist rest provides comfort for long hours of use, the keyboard is backlit and the touchpad is buttonless. Under the hood is the energy efficient Haswell Intel Core i5-4200U that clocks in at 1.6 Ghz, and goes up to 2.6 Ghz with Turbo Boost. Paired with 4 GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, fast boot times and zippy performance for most moderately intensive tasks and multitasking can be expected. With the graphics being handled by the Intel HD 4400, this is not a machine for serious gamers, but most casual games should run well.
The Samsung 940X3G-K01DE boasts some impressive specs in its 13.3 inch touchscreen. Not content with Full HD, Samsung have opted to provide users with a QHD screen with a resolution of 3200x1800. This may complicate matters when attempting to output visuals to another display. The fingerprint attracting glossy multi-touch screen is a good pairing with the Windows 8 OS. The weight is light at 1.387 kg and the 55 Wh battery will give users close to 8 hours of moderate use which provides a great amount of portability. With its great battery life and performance, this makes a great choice for a portable work machine. However, the minimizing of ports to save space and the QHD screen may provide some users a few barriers to ease of use.

Samsung already had the best Ultrabook on the market, and it's managed to stay on top in 2013, even as its competitors have improved battery life and performance on their own models. Like its predecessor, the ATIV Book 9 Plus is impressively thin, with an understated design and sturdy build quality.

If you absolutely must have that stunning display, then we would wholeheartedly recommend the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus. It's built to be future-proof, and you won't be disappointed with any aspect of its performance. Its price is the only area you'll need to convince yourself on. Otherwise, you might want to consider some of its closest competitors. Alternatively, Samsung has also produced a budget version of the Ativ, called the Lite, which sacrifices performance in the quest for a £500 price tag.

What a difference a refresh makes. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus improves upon its predecessor in nearly every way, offering much longer battery life and a gorgeous Retina-like display. This Ultrabook also runs cooler than the previous version. If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, you'll appreciate how well Samsung's handset and laptop work together.

Samsung’s ability to put together a good-looking laptop was already assured, and the Book 9 Plus puts things beyond doubt; topping it off with such an ambitious display is a welcome bonus. However, before you rush out and drop £1,299 on it, it’s worth taking a breath: buy the Book 9 Plus and you’ll be an early adopter. Although it’s heartening to see Microsoft embracing high-definition screens with Windows 8.1, our experience suggests your enjoyment of the Book 9 Plus will depend greatly on individual application support.

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite
The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite is a budget ultrabook based on the Samsung Ativ Book 9 series of premium super thin machines. In order to save money, the body is made from plastics instead of premium metals and it is powered by an AMD processor instead of the latest Intel cores. Technically it cannot be called an ultrabook, since that name belongs to Intel. Immediately, the user will notice how this machine feels. It looks sleek enough, but it cannot run away from the plastic styling that makes it look and feel like a budget laptop. The keyboard layout is good for a 13 inch machine and the keyboard is relatively comfortable to use. The 1366x768 pixel resolution is decent enough, and the touchscreen works well enough. The colors and definition are not amazing, but this can be expected on a budget machine.
The AMD Quad Core processor with 1.0 GHz performs reasonably well for most light tasks, but multitasking and heavier tasks will find this machine wanting. At this price point, there are definitely better alternatives out there. The battery life is rather disappointing, and perhaps the second most significant letdown of not having the power saving Intel processors onboard. While most similar machines out there will get you 8 hours of use, this machine manages only 5 hours. If the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite had been priced even lower than its current "budget" price, it would have been good value for the money. But as it stands, there are better options to be had.

The Samsung Book 9 Lite certainly has its flaws – its low-grade display means limited viewing angles that would be unacceptable in anything other than a budget laptop. However, its performance is rescued by that solid-state drive, while its attractive slimline design and impressive battery life are unmatched by just about any other laptop in this price range.

All told, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite may have a passing resemblance to the highly rated Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus, but it's only skin deep. Even among other entry-level ultrabooks and desktop replacements, the Book 9 Lite has frustratingly slow performance and only middling battery life. For a better touch-screen laptop at a similar price, the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch is still the better option.

AMD processors aren’t known for their speed. The Ativ Book 9 Lite delivers good performance with productivity applications, such as word processing, Web surfing, and light multimedia usage. It delivered a Notebook WorldBench 8.1 score of 198. That puts it on a par with some of the other Ultrabooks we’ve tested, such as the Asus B400A Ultrabook (197) and the Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch. It’s twice as fast as our benchmark testing unit, the Asus VivoBook S550CA. If you don’t have one of these other Samsung devices, or if you do, but don’t intend to use the Ativ Book 9 Lite as an extension of it, look elsewhere. You’ll get a higher-quality laptop for a lower price.

Samsung's ATIV Book 9 Lite derives its name from the lack of features and its lower price than its other ATIV Book 9 laptops. The problem is that it sacrifices a bit too much to be a really recommended system for those looking at a more affordable ultrathin laptop. Its performance is less than other systems in that price range.

There’s a lot to like about the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite. It’s relatively thin and light, offers decent day-to-day performance, and up to 6 hours of battery life. If it weren’t for the fact that I spent $800 on my Series 9 notebook a year ago and got a model that’s thinner, lighter, and faster, it’d be a lot easier to recommend the ATIV Book 9 Lite.

I started off liking the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite. Its plastic casing didn't bother me as I appreciated its light weight and slim form factor, carrying it around a lot and rarely running out of juice. The graphics performance was also pleasing, on the whole. Even the vague suggestion that this laptop could be running a tablet chip didn't appear to be an encumbrance. Yes, I was prepared to be quite forgiving as I spent most of my time with it presuming it cost £400, which even then seemed a bit on the high side. It was only later I discovered its £500 pricetag, which rather took the shine off things for me. Surely, if you're touting a product as a Lite model, it really should be light on the wallet too – and especially so if you've something to hide.

Samsung's Ativ Book 9 Lite is only around one-third the price of the Plus model. This means a plastic chassis and cheap screen and processor, while keeping an impressively thin and light form factor. Component downgrades mean this laptop is no powerhouse but it does the job well and few laptops at this price are so thin and light.

Samsung’s ATIV Book 9 Lite is an interesting, but failed, experiment. There are many things that we like about it; the keyboard is easy to love, the chassis is slim, and build quality is good for the price. If the Lite sold with a fourth-gen Intel Haswell processor, even a slow one, it’d be a serious contender in the budget Ultrabook market.

At £600, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite is a rather expensive bit of kit for general use such as web browsing and word processing: these are tasks you can do with a £300 entry-level notebook, for example. However, what you're paying extra for with the Ativ Book 9 Lite is its slimline design, portability and, unfortunately, its touchscreen, which is let down significantly by mediocre display quality. It just depends whether you think portability is worth the extra money or not.

It may not come cheap, but the Samsung Ativ 9 Plus looks and feels its money. It’s a great looking laptop of near-flawless build quality and a brilliant screen. The superb screen resolution ensures that other laptops using similarly up-to-date components will offer better battery life, but thanks to the optimisation of the Intel Haswell CPU, it lasts for a full day of work anyway. Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus
Samsung is one of the pioneers in ultrabooks and have been a major force in this sector for a good reason; they make excellent ultrabooks. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is dark and smooth with rounded corners. The slim body, which is only 0.53 inches (1.35 cm) makes it look very impressive. Not only is the body of the ultrabook beautiful, is 13.3 inch screen has an amazing 3200 by 1800 pixel resolution which makes other devices' HD screen look pale. The high resolution screen has breathtaking colors, above average viewing angles and responsive touch response.
The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor with a processing speed of 1.6 GHz as well as 4 GB RAM. It also comes with a 128 GB SSD. As a result, performance is no issue.
Despite being thin, it comes with 2 USB ports, a mini VGA port, a micro HDMI port and a typical headphone/microphone jack. It is capable of wireless connectivity with both Wifi 802.11 b/g/n as well as Bluetooth 4.0 but has no Ethernet port for wired connections.
All in all, Samsung has always been one of the best ultrabook manufacturers and the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is definitely one of the better products. The only downside would be the hefty price tag. If the user can stomach that, this laptop is a great buy.

Pixel frenzy. Retina is a thing of the past. Samsung stirs up the competition with a sensational QHD+ screen and even beats the MacBook series from Apple. Comprised of an energy-efficient Haswell CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD, the ATIV Book 9 Plus fights for the lead in the ultrabook sector - an ambitious undertaking.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is not only lightweight and stylish, but it also has the power to perform well. Its price is also reasonable (around $1200, street) considering all of the machines high-end features. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this system to anyone who is looking for a super-slim ultrabook running Windows 8.

Of course when we start criticising a laptop for having a too-high-resolution screen and not being quite powerful enough for high-end gaming, we are being overly picky. You don't buy an Ultrabook for hardcore gaming - you buy an Alienware 17 or PlayStation Vita Slim. And as far as the screen goes, well, that's more of a Windows 8.1 flaw than any fault of the Ativ Book 9 Plus. That said, this isn't quite the MacBook-beater we were hoping for. It still feels a little underpowered given its high price, and if you're after a Windows 8.1-running Ultrabook, we'd go for the Asus Zenbook UX302 instead. Still, lovely screen.

In conclusion, it is pretty clear that Samsung managed to create a leading ultra-thin design on the market. The ATIV Book 9+ is an awesome laptop and it’s not easy to find a real competitor in the PC space because most systems either don’t have a QHD+ display, are significantly bulkier, or don’t have the level of “polish” that this laptop has. I like computers like the Yoga 2, which offers an impressive features/price ratio, but it doesn’t match the design of the ATIV Book 9+. The ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-XH72T (2.6lbs!) is also worth mentioning along with the Sony Vaio 13 Pro… I haven’t used them yet, but they look good on paper.

Overall, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is one of the most well-rounded ultrabooks we've ever seen. The notebook sports a gorgeous 3,200x1,800 display, pitch-perfect audio, and an excellent keyboard and touch pad, all wrapped up in a sleek aluminum design. And thanks to its nine-hour battery life—almost twice as long as many competing ultrabooks—the Plus will last an entire workday with juice to spare.

Utilizing the best in optimized hardware from the past several generations of Samsung notebooks and today’s finest in processing power (save the slightly more expensive Intel i7 version of this device), the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is easily one of the finest laptops on the market today. Even without the value-adding features like the ability to become entirely flat, a 10-point touchscreen, and unique connectivity options with Samsung smartphones, this notebook is well worth your time going into 2014.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus is a great ultrabook with an excellent design, lots of processing power and top-notch sound quality (for an ultrabook). But with screen contrast this low (330:1), we just can't give it five stars. Plus, it has only half the battery life of the Apple MacBook Air.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 is one of the nicer Windows Ultrabooks around at the moment with stylish design and impressive-looking specifications. In terms of performance and battery life, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is in line with other premium ultrabooks, both in performance scores and pricing. What the Book 9 Plus offers that others do not, however, is a higher-than-HD screen that rivals Apple's Retina Display. About the only thing I can knock the Book 9 Plus for is the use of ports that require dongles, but that's not so uncommon on thinner ultrabooks. For the price, it matches the portability and performance of the Editors' Choice Acer Aspire S7 and offers the sort of resolution you'll prize when working with photos or enjoying movies. Add it all up, and the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is the new Editors' Choice for premium ultrabooks.

The ATIV Book 9 Plus is a real eye-opener of an ultraportable. With its attractive anodized-aluminum body highlighted by streaks of silver, Samsung's Ultrabook (priced at $1,224) offers Apple-level aesthetics for the Windows crowd. Samsung's ATIV Book 9 Plus is a gorgeous, aluminum-clad ultraportable with a vibrant quad-HD touch screen and fairly strong battery life.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 is still one of the most stylish Ultrabooks out there. It combines that with performance and productivity in a well-balanced package with no major issues to speak of. Compared to the previous version of the ATIV/Series9 Haswell it offers big battery life advantages over Ivy Bridge but we question the need for such a high DPI screen considering the issues with some applications on the desktop. Touch, we feel, is becoming more and more useful as users adapt and Windows 8 Modern UI apps evolve. It would have been nice to see AC support on the WiFi, the inclusion of the important port adaptors and maybe next time round Samsung will need to think about WiGig but as it is, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 is an extremely strong Ultrabook offering that, in many respects, leads the way.

Take a beautiful Windows ultrabook design. Add a super-high-resolution touch screen and longer-battery-life Intel Haswell processor. What could be wrong with that? If you’re just looking for an all-around excellently made Windows touch ultrabook and don’t mind that it's on the expensive side (and doesn’t convert to a tablet), the improved Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus is worth the investment.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is one of the best Ultrabooks on the market, and as of this writing, still one of the few with Haswell. From a design perspective, nothing beats the 9 Plus, and it's more visually daring than the aging MacBook Air design yet it's stately enough for business.

What were Samsung thinking of when they designed this notebook? Perhaps it is aimed at those who desire portability, ease of use and modest computing power while wanting something bigger than a tablet with a keyboard, all at a reasonable price. Anyone upgrading from a netbook to this model would appreciate the larger screen and much better responsiveness. Samsung have also catered for both those who want a touchscreen notebook and for those who don't. They could well be watching the sales statistics with interest given Intel's view that touchscreen is the only way forward for the smaller notebooks.

Light, slim, (more) affordable. Samsung's ATIV Book 9 Plus established itself as a high-end contender in the Ultrabook category. Equipped with identical hardware, but without the "Plus" in the name and sans the reflective QHD+ display, the cheaper ATIV Book 9 retails for about 350 Euro (~$480) less.

Model with flaws. Thin, elegant, noble – and expensive. The latest Ultrabook from Samsung's popular ATIV 9-series has high ambitions and cannot only convince with its design. Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks as well that prevent a very good rating, although the most annoying issue could be solved with a simple update.

For anyone tired of working day to day on a small screen but still wants a high-end, thin-and-light with a long, long battery life, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition is one sweet system. It ain't cheap, though, and you'll probably need to come up with some combination of external and cloud storage to compensate for its 128GB SSD.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 is one of the sexiest laptops to come through the Lab this year, but it's expensive for the processing power, memory, storage, and video resolution it has to offer. If you're passionate about high-quality audio, this laptop's premium price tag is probably justified. Just be sure to install Foobar2000 and its WASAPI component before you plug in your favorite headphones.

When we reviewed the 13.3-inch Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus$1,247.00 at Amazon late last year, we called it "a near-perfect ultrabook." Resolution has fallen from quad HD to mere 1080p, but otherwise Samsung's ATIV Book 9 2014 Edition boasts everything we loved about the Book 9 Plus—a svelte aluminum shape, stellar keyboard, crystal-clear audio, and great battery life—in a larger 15.6-inch build.

While I was sad to see that the Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition didn't offer the same higher-than-HD screen seen on the previous Book 9 Plus, it was one of the only disappointments in an otherwise premium ultraportable. The slim design and sturdy aluminum build is just as impressive as ever, and the larger 15.6-inch display offers more screen real estate in roughly the same package, not to mention the all-day battery life, a healthy port selection, and improvements to the keyboard and sound quality. The Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7s Touch is our Editors' Choice for high-end ultrabooks, largely due to its own 2,560-by-1,440 resolution screen and lightweight magnesium construction. It takes the top spot due to its premium features, but the new Samsung Ativ Book 9 2014 Edition comes in as a close second, and is recommended for anyone who wants a premium ultrabook, but doesn't see the need for a higher-than-HD display.

With its long battery life, solid performance, gorgeous display and attractive design, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 (2014 Edition) is a strong choice for anyone looking for a highly portable 15-inch notebook. Though the Book 9's sleek aluminum chassis and high-res touch screen justify this machine's high, $1,499 price, we wish the laptop offered more graphics oomph or a faster CPU.

Samsung’s ATIV Book 9 is essentially a 15-inch MacBook Air. If you’ve ever wanted such a thing, well, here’s your chance to own it, albeit with Windows 8.1 instead of OS X. The ATIV Book 9′s razor-thin profile, minimal heft, and bright display make it more portable than some 13-inch Ultrabooks, yet it still provides the space and comfort of a large, mainstream laptop.

Portability is the keyword when talking about the Samsung Ativ 930X2K, as it sleek and slim for all those instances you need to bring your work around from one meeting to another, or from one presentation to another. The shiny black body gives you an air of sophisticated professionalism. Samsung's ATIV Book 9 Blade system offers an extremely portable laptop system that doesn't compromise on connectivity like Apple's MacBook. Instead, it sacrifices a few other features by providing slightly less performance and lower battery life. Of key concern though is the small AC adapter pin that plugs into the laptop that is prone to being bent or broken.

It's rare that we get an opportunity to test a pair of Windows and OS X laptops so close in configuration, features, and design, and within weeks of each other. The Ativ Book 9 can safely be called a good alternative to the MacBook if you want something slim and light with a 12-inch higher-res screen, but need to run Windows.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 is a stunning little notebook that embodies the word "ultraportable." It's attractive, has a beautiful display, and offers solid overall performance. Plus, this system offers more ports than the new MacBook. However, the relatively short battery life makes this system a tough sell for its $1,199 price.

The ATIV Book 9 sits in a tough spot. While its clearly looking toward the slim, clamshell design of a dedicated notebook, it is held back by its performance and battery life. Inputs are also a problem with an unresponsive touchpad and a cramped keyboard tarnishing the user experience. Admittedly, the notebook’s display is both bright and beautiful.

Fashionably designed using mid-range materials and high-end parts, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is an obvious choice to quell MacBook Pro envy. This laptop has the "wow" factor that bargain hunters with taste desire.

The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin isn’t a laptop for everyone; I personally wouldn’t buy it, because I’m willing to sacrifice some features for portability. But if you happen to be looking for a 15-inch Windows 10 laptop that "bends" and can support a fairly heavy workload, this one should at least be a consideration. Samsung has managed to cram a lot of power into a $1,199 15-inch laptop, compared with the $1,2999 Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15, the less powerful $1,249 HP Spectre x360 15T, and the unbending $2,229 Dell XPS 15 and $1,999 15-inch MacBook Pro. That alone is a feat, even if its design is not.

The HDR feature is more of a gimmick than a must-have feature (and there's amuch deeper explanation about why HDR doesn't always matter much on laptops, tablets and phones here), but I like that this is a full-featured 15-inch hybrid with both a Core i7 CPU and discrete Nvidia graphics, at a price that's reasonable.

The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is a very well-made convertible laptop with a sharp, vibrant display, a nice build, and the fastest performance in the category. Its quick speeds and valuable set of features make it useful for getting real work done, or for entertainment. The 15-inch size, though, is a bit awkward, and it's the heaviest of these convertible laptops—portability is not a strong suit, but it will serve you well at home. It's reasonably priced for what it offers, but the Acer Aspire R 14 includes many of the same features and equivalent battery life for just $700.

All in all, the Notebook 7 Spin does what it sets out to do: deliver a sensibly priced, big-screen convertible for users who don't choose to hold out for an NVMe solid-state drive or a 4K resolution display. It also does a good job of establishing the Notebook 7 line a notch below Samsung's premium Notebook 9 models.

If you care about your laptop looking as good as it performs, the Samsung Notebook 7 Spin will catch your eye with its minimalist look. In addition, it has enough horsepower for some graphic design and the lightest of gaming. Unfortunately, its shallow keyboard, sloppy webcam and ephemeral battery life make it more difficult to recommend for true productivity users.

The Samsung Notebook 9 Spin has the potential to turn the productivity world on its head and back again. For $1,199, you get some of the best things about the Ativ series, including a slim design and powerful performance, as well as a pair of 360-degree hinges, creating a versatile workhorse. It's just too bad that this convertible has so little endurance.

Still, don't let that discourage you. If what's packed in the Notebook 9 fits roughly in with what you're looking for—and you like the laptop's silver shell and impressively light weight—it's a very good laptop at a price that, while not a tight-budget option, is less than some competing premium machines that weigh more.

If you're in the market for the thinnest and lightest Core i5 13" Ultrabook you can get, buy this. Really. That is unless you want a touch screen. The Samsung Notebook 9 is the kind of innovation we like to see--rather than adding a bunch of features that don't improve computing or mobility or are hard to see the difference (4K displays on 12.5" laptops- ha!), we have the perfect storm of super-portability, performance, battery life and classy design and materials.

There's a lot to like here: a pleasing 4K touch screen with low glare, the fast quad core Intel i7 CPU, NVIDIA GTX 950M dedicated graphics, SSD, adequate though not class leading battery runtimes and a very comfy backlit keyboard. The price is nice too--the Samsung is currently one of the least expensive in this premium powerhouse laptop tier.

Overall, the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro’s design seems like a compromise—perhaps a little too much so. It basically does everything well, but doesn’t truly excel at any one thing. The end result is that this laptop fails to stand out asthe 15-incher to have, despite its bells and whistles.

In the end, The ATIV Book 9 Pro highlights what Samsung often does well on its laptops: combine a sleek, seductive aluminum design with a bright colorful touch screen. At $1,600, the ATIV Book also compares favorably with the Dell XPS 15's $1,800 price when equipped with discrete graphics and a UHD touch screen. However, you can pick up the XPS 15 for $1,000 if you're willing to forego a 4K display and discrete graphics.

It may be the simplicity, the singularity of vision that this notebook nearly captures, but doesn't quite embody fully. Suffice to say, Samsung is right on the money when it comes to hardware. Everything (save the power cord) looks and feels - and runs - great. Now if only Samsung could bring as strong a game to the software they employ as they do the hardware they manufacture.

We had no trouble deciding to give the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Pro four stars on our five-star rating scale. It's relatively trim for a 15.6-inch laptop, squeezing under the four-and-a-half-pound line. Its display and keyboard are both above average, and its sound well above average. Except for some screen wobble, it's solidly built.
