Sad news for Galaxy S27 series, as cameras skip key upgrade once again

Rumors and leaks surrounding both the iPhone 18 series and the Galaxy S27 series have suggested that the phones will come with variable aperture. Now, it looks like only one of these companies will be able to pull it off.

A new report from ETNews has cited industry sources and claimed that Samsung will not bring variable aperture with its Galaxy S27 series. Despite working with multiple partners like Samsung Electro-Mechanics and MCnex, the Korean smartphone giant has reportedly decided to drop the feature due to “higher manufacturing costs and thicker camera bodies.”

The report cites an official from the electronics components industry explaining that camera performance is not a priority for consumers anymore when buying a new phone. That, coupled with increasing component costs, forced Samsung to cut back on the key camera feature.

Variable aperture allows adjusting the amount of light that reaches the sensor by using a physically moving lens opening, rather than a software-based solution. Samsung used variable aperture in the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S10, but decided to remove it from subsequent launches. However, following reports of the iPhone 18 series coming with variable aperture, Samsung also wanted to bring the feature to its Galaxy S27 series.
