Report: PS6 will launch in 2027, early 2028 at the latest, despite latest speculation

The release timelines for new consoles are a bit up in the air considering the current RAM and storage pricing apocalypse. There have been numerous reports of delays, the most recent citing a 2029 release, though nothing has come directly from Microsoft or Sony. The typical console life cycle is seven years which means 2027 should mark the arrival of new consoles, and it looks like that will most likely hold true, according to a known leaker.
The information comes from Moore’s Law Is Dead on YouTube (linked below). MLID has been sharing details about the new consoles, specifically the AMD APUs that will power them, for quite some time. In the latest video, MLID expands upon a comment on his Patreon about the release timeline for the PS6. The commentor states that Sony will not delay the console, at least not by a lot, because it would be more costly to delay than to release it on time at a higher price.
MLID echoes this opinion and adds that the PS6 will “almost certainly come out in 2027, if not, probably early 2028. I do not think it will be delayed to 2029.” Sony has paid AMD millions of dollars for the custom APU and paying extra for RAM for the first six months of the console’s life is not worth delaying the console. Furthermore, MLID claims to have seen documents that state clauses of Sony’s contracts with AMD and TSMC, and these documents mention Q2 2027 for production timelines. If Sony were to push these timelines, it would lose its allotment of 3nm manufacturing and possibly be pushed to 2030.
The leaker also mentions that Sony launched the PS5 (buy on Amazon) in 2020 during COVID 19 and despite reports of delays back then, the console still launched. So even if they get less RAM or costlier RAM than they wanted, they will still not delay the PS6. At most, there could be a six-month delay to April 2028 for tax season, but nothing more. Lastly, citing sources behind the scenes, the prolific leaker said that RAM prices are expected to improve by the end of this year, and even more by early next year, which will allow Sony to make a judgement call on whether to launch the console end of 2027 or early 2028.
