Realme confirms Qualcomm made last-minute name change to Snapdragon 8 Elite
Realme has started sending out review units of its first Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship phone, the Realme GT 7 Pro. This new SoC is Qualcomm's first mobile flagship offering with in-house Oryon cores, but it wasn't expected to be called what it's known as now.
Following last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, this new 3 nm flagship SoC was supposed to be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Even Realme expected the same, and the review unit of GT 7 Pro that Android Authority received has no mention of "Snapdragon 8 Elite" anywhere on the box.
Android Authority then reached out to Realme, and a company representative said that Qualcomm didn't notify them about the name change before GT 7 Pro's box was designed. The representative adds that the confirmation about the Snapdragon 8 Elite naming was only confirmed "several days before the Snapdragon Summit." However, it's worth noting that prominent Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has tipped about the name change in early October. But again, it's possible Qualcomm wasn't too sure about it until the launch event was around the corner.
Nonetheless, given the last-minute confirmation of the name change, Realme didn't have enough time to reprint the boxes that were supposed to reach reviewers before the official launch. However, the company official confirms that the mention of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was removed from the mass-produced retail boxes.
Of course, not all smartphone makers may have been affected by this last-minute name change, as Realme may have prepared the review unit boxes a bit too early than others. The company official also notes that the GT 7 Pro will be the first Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship phone to be widely available, with plans for a launch in India and Europe soon after the smartphone's debut in China.
