Microsoft delays Recall for Copilot+ to December
Microsoft has delayed the Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs once again. The feature is supposed to make finding things on Windows easier by taking screenshots of user activity at regular intervals and allowing them to search through the contents. It uses local AI models to generate a timeline that users can sift through.
The company initially planned a roll-out of the feature in June. However, backlash from users and security experts forced a delay to November. It also said that Recall will first be available in testing to Microsoft Insiders instead of the previous plans to roll it out as an opt-in feature.
Now, the company has announced a third delay to December. Brendon LeBlanc, senior product manager of Windows, told The Verge that Microsoft is "committed to delivering a secure and trusted experience with Recall" and it's "taking additional time to refine the experience before previewing it with Windows Insiders".
The feature will be exclusive to "Copilot+ PCs" or PCs with dedicated NPUs (Neural Processing Unit). To qualify as a "Copilot+ PC", Microsoft mandates an NPU capable of 40 trillion operations per second, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage.
