Rakuten might have discontinued the Kobo Sage, with no plans for a successor

Rakuten released the Kobo Sage in 2021 as an eReader with physical page-turn buttons and stylus support. By now, one would expect it to have received a successor. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened, and might likely never happen.
According to Good eReader, the Kobo Sage has been out of stock since mid-2025 in most markets, with the exception of New Zealand. With no news regarding when the 8-inch eReader will be restocked and no reports of a successor, the publication believes that Rakuten has discontinued the Kobo Sage.
Last year, Kobo technically didn't release any new eReader save for launching the Kobo Clara Colour in white. However, it is still early 2026 and we don't know what the year holds for the Kobo line of eReaders.
While Kobo doesn't offer any 8-inch eReader with a Black and White screen at the moment, the 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour (available on Amazon for $229.99) is still the closest replacement as it has features of the Sage such as physical page-turn buttons, an IPX8 water resistance rating, and stylus support. It is also compatible with the Kobo Remote that was released in late 2025.
If you don't fancy color e-Readers, there's the Boox Go 7. It also has page-turn buttons, stylus support, but ships with Android. Available for $249.99 on Amazon, other features are 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, and a built-in speaker and microphone.
