RTX 5060/Ti may get VRAM upgrade, but with a catch

Just as was rumored for the entry-level RTX 5050 GPUs, the RTX 5060 (buy on Amazon) and RTX 5060 Ti (buy on Amazon) models also seem to be in line for a VRAM upgrade. However, whether it is actually an upgrade is questionable because the larger capacity seems to be coming at the cost of bandwidth. This is said to be Nvidia's move to tackle the ongoing memory crisis.
The information comes from Board Channels (via Videocardz) and it claims that RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti will be refreshed with 9 GB VRAM models. This means the memory configuration will go from four chip 128-bit GDDR6 to three chip 96-bit GDDR7. The overall bandwidth would drop from the current 448 GB/s to 336 GB/s, which would translate to slower performance but increased memory capacity.
As per the report, this is being done to lower costs and tackle the VRAM shortage. It adds that 3 GB DDR7 is already in the product planning stage and that it is expected to be officially unveiled by the end of May or beginning of June. The RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 would follow the laptop version of the RTX 5090 with 3 GB GDDR7 chips. For now, there is no release date for these updated GPUs.
It should be noted that the news about RTX 5050 cards getting the same treatment came out last month with no timeline so the next two months could bring about a major change in VRAM configurations for Nvidia GPUs.
