The Disk Pro 2 from Sharge is a portable SSD enclosure with an interesting concept: It can magnetically attach to smartphones, handhelds and other devices, offers a range of ports including an SD slot for expansion cards, is incredibly fast, and is actively cooled by a fan. Is it the perfect companion for capturing, editing and more?

Normally, an external SSD has a USB cable dangling from it, and that's about it. You don't really need much more from external storage—or do you? Yes, say the developers behind the new Disk Pro 2, which packs the SSD enclosure with a whole host of extras.

The docking mechanism is particularly useful. Normally, external SSDs sit on your desk or helplessly dangle from your device when you're on the go because you don't have a free hand to hold the SSD as well.

If the cable is too short, you have even more juggling to do. The Disk Pro 2, on the other hand, simply attaches magnetically to compatible surfaces. Instead of dangling around, it stays firmly "stuck" to the back of a smartphone, the base of a laptop and more.

The ports are another standout feature, especially considering that the enclosure remains fairly compact: The Disk Pro 2 has one USB-A port, two USB-C ports, a full-size SD card slot, a separate slot for microSD cards, and even an HDMI port. The latter is rated for 4K@144 Hz or 8K@30 Hz. The two SD slots let you expand your portable storage on the one hand and quickly transfer data from one medium to another on the other. The various ports are controlled by a total of four separate controllers.

Thanks to its hot-swap design, compatible M.2 SSDs can be replaced in next to no time, and the enclosure can accommodate SSDs with capacities of up to 8 TB. However, the manufacturer also notes that storage modules with components on both sides, or particularly thick modules in general, may not fit inside the enclosure. It's therefore worth checking whether your particular storage device is compatible before purchasing.

The maximum speed is rated at 10 Gb/s, which corresponds to USB 3.2 Gen 2. There are already faster enclosures available, but they are significantly less flexible. To prevent the enclosure from getting too hot when using external devices at the corresponding speeds and with the various ports, it features an active cooling fan. Fortunately, a three-way switch allows you to turn the fan off as well (Off, Auto, Turbo).

The Disk Pro 2 is currently available for pre-order. Shipping is scheduled to begin in October. The model currently costs around $85.
