Performance Review: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU

Raytracing for mainstream. After the high-end models RTX 3060, RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 you can now get a mid-range version for notebooks - at least if they are available. We already had the chance to test the promising RTX 3050 Ti ahead of the launch and evaluate the performance.

Gaming Laptop

It does not matter if you are looking for processors or graphics cards: Most people probably know that modern hardware is hard to get for a couple of reasons (mining hype, chip yields, shortage of resources, ...). Both AMD and Nvidia are facing issues in terms of production and availability, but this does not stop the manufacturers from launching new products on a regular basis.

While the high-end segment got new models with the RTX 3060 all the way up to the RTX 3080 in the beginning of the year, Nvidia is now targeting the mainstream sector. Not only do the RTX 3050 and the RTX 3050 Ti (we will leave out the addition of the official ending "Laptop GPU") promise sufficient performance for smooth 1080p gaming, but Raytracing is also introduced in more affordable price regions. However, we can spoil the results here a bit, the RTX performance is hardly convincing in any title.

Test System

Our test system was an early evaluation sample from Schenker. We are not allowed to specify the underlying barebone, but the hardware itself is no secret.

To ensure the graphics card has a powerful companion, it uses a very fast six-core CPU from AMD. The Ryzen 5 5600H can easily keep up with the competition from Intel and even beats them in many applications. 2x 8 GB DDR4-3200 RAM in a dual-channel configuration and a 1 TB SSD are also decent specs for a mainstream notebook. The 15-inch screen has the 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), even though we performed all benchmarks with an external 4K screen.

Specs

The specifications of the new RTX 3050 Ti remind us of the direct predecessor GTX 1650 Ti at first: In addition to the Boost clock (1495 MHz for the tested model), the size of the video memory is identical as well. 4 GB GDDR6-VRAM with a 128-bit interface are pretty small in 2021, even for a mid-range GPU. Many modern games often require more than 6 or even 8 GB VRAM in higher settings, which means the situation is not ideal for the next couple of years, despite the RTX support. You should be aware of this before you buy this GPU.

Nvidia increased the number of shader units, even though they are not perfectly comparable due to different GPU architectures (Ampere vs. Turing). Instead of 1024 CUDA cores, the RTX 3050 Ti is equipped with 2560 CUDA cores, which suggests a noticeable performance advantage. This number is even higher compared to the GTX 1660 Ti (1536 shader units) and the RTX 2060 (1920 shader units), although they are both supported by 6 GB VRAM and a 192-bit interface. The new mid-range GPU is still far behind the RTX 3060 (3840 shader units), though.

Similar to the more expensive Ampere GPUs, the RTX 3050 Ti also has a very wide TGP range, which has a massive effect on the performance. Our unit was configured at 60W (75W with Dynamic Boost), which is a medium/high value for the model (35 to 80W). Other laptops with the RTX 3050 Ti and lower TGP settings can be much slower.

Gaming Benchmarks

The RTX 3050 Ti offers decent gaming performance as long as the game does not have increased VRAM requirements and you use the 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). In ideal scenarios, the mid-range GPU is comparable to the old Turing GPUs GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060. The situation changes in modern titles high higher VRAM requirements (like Call of Duty Cold War), where the frame rate is closer to a GTX 1650 (Ti). You can still play almost all games in 1080p at high or even maximum settings (40 fps+).

The performance is sometimes even sufficient for QHD panel (2560 x 1440 pixels), but the RTX 3050 Ti is not suited for gaming on 4K screens. When you activate Raytracing, the performance will often drop to unplayable levels even in 1080p - except you reduce the settings noticeably.

Verdict

Despite the pretty limited Raytracing performance (at least without DLSS) and the low memory equipment (only 4 GB VRAM), the RTX 3050 Ti pretty much meets the promises and the expectations we had: Sufficient performance for smooth gaming in Full-HD at high or maximum settings.

When you look at all the results, the performance for a medium/high TGP model is slightly behind the old GTX 1660 Ti, which has more VRAM (6 GB), so it offers more steady performance and should also perform better in the next couple of years as long as you can live without Raytracing. Compared to the GTX 1650 (Ti), the RTX 3050 Ti usually performs well and offers a nice amount of additional performance, so it might be worth the upgrade.

Long story short: The RTX 3050 Ti is a good companion for price-conscious gamers. Core gamers on the other hand should at least get the RTX 2060 or RTX 3060, respectively.
