Oura has announced plans to bring blood pressure monitoring to its Gen 3 and Gen 4 smart rings. The feature will be available to test before its full rollout too, albeit with some caveats at this stage.

The Huawei Watch D and Watch D2 are still the only consumer-grade wearables that offer blood pressure monitoring to a medically-certified level. Nonetheless, that has not stopped rivals like Apple and Samsung from advertising their smartwatches as being capable of monitoring blood pressure levels as needed. Allegedly, the Circular Ring 2 can as well, although blood pressure monitoring is paywalled by default.

Now, Oura has indicated that it will be bringing similar support to some of its most recent smart rings. Specifically, the company hopes to offer blood pressure monitoring on its Oura Ring 3 and Oura Ring 4 (curr. $499 on Amazon). However, Oura requires regulatory approval before it could distribute the feature to consumers.

In the meantime, the company has announced that it will soon be offering early access for owners who opt into its Oura Labs service. For reference, Oura’s smart rings interpret blood pressure levels via their PPG sensors. Also, neither the Oura Ring 3 nor the Oura Ring 4 require calibration with a medical grade blood pressure monitor before usage. In other words, the Oura Ring 3 and Oura Ring 4 will be incapable of showing diastolic and systolic metrics.

Unfortunately, this only extends to owners who are based in the US and at least 22 years old. Other caveats exist too, including preventing Oura Ring 3 and Oura Ring 4 owners with pacemakers from participating. Please see Oura’s website for more details.
