Released almost four years after the fan-favorite Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV had to meet massive expectations. GTA IV not only met these expectations but also exceeded them in many ways. The game arguably has the best story in a GTA title, fun combat, and a marvelous open world. In many respects, GTA IV is even better than GTA V and, to some, is still the best GTA/open-world game ever made.
So, it's always a perfect time to play GTA IV, whether you’ve played the game before or not. This is especially true now that GTA IV: The Complete Edition is only $5.99 on Steam, a 70% discount.
GTA IV: The Complete Edition includes the base game and the two post-launch DLCs.
GTA IV combines a dynamic open world with a dark story
GTA IV takes place in Liberty City, a digital imitation of New York City. The city, with its tall buildings, dense traffic, and abundant crime, provides a worthy backdrop to Niko Bellic’s “American Dream” story. Fresh off the boat, Niko is trying to carve out a new life in Liberty City with the help of his cousin and a never-ending stream of criminal opportunities.
GTA IV’s main story is considered by many to be the best in any GTA game. Per IGN’s original 2008 review, the game features “characters and a world with a level of depth previously unseen in gaming and elevates its story from a mere shoot-em-up to an Oscar-caliber drama.”
Where the story is full of action, it also asks players deeply profound questions around morality. Through Niko’s struggles, GTA IV attempts to show players the futility of trying to carve out a happy ending by ending lives.
Gameplay-wise, GTA IV follows the same principles established by other GTA titles. You receive missions from different characters, complete the mission, and get rewarded, often with money. The missions involve driving, chase sequences, gunfights, and more. According to IGN, GTA IV utilizes the “locations of missions, the variety in the enemies, the dynamic aspects of the AI, and the dialogue” to keep the gameplay fresh and enjoyable, even for multiple playthroughs.
Finally, a dynamic open-world, plenty of tunes to listen to, and a heap of side activities complement the main storyline and the gameplay to make GTA IV a game worth experiencing again and again.
