Nioh 2 reviews and gameplay
Being a Souls-like Nioh 2's main appeal is in its combat, and the game offers its players plenty of variation in its fantastical melee battles against various yokai in the Japanese Sengoku period. Nioh 2 follows the journey of a half-human half-yokai, known in the game as a "Shiftling," as you try to uncover the mystery of your origin. Many Steam reviews of Nioh 2 praise its partially historic story, although it's easy to get lost if you're not immediately hooked. Fortunately, the best parts of Nioh 2 all stem from things like extensive character customisation, complex combat with ample depth and progression, and plentiful variation in play styles and weapons.
Being half demon, the protagonist of Nioh 2 has the ability to transform into a yokai form and use immensely powerful combat skills and special abilities. Combat is heavily skills-dependent, and the game will punish you for missing dodges, mis-timing attacks, or forgetting your opponent's moves, however, as you battle various yokai throughout the Sengoku period, you will learn new skills and develop your own unique combat style.
Altogether, there are 11 different melee weapon classes in Nioh 2, and each melee weapon has three stances to choose from. Players also have a separate skill tree for each weapon type, giving you plenty to choose from and making Nioh 2 immensely replayable. In addition to a variety of weapons, you can also learn Ninjutsu and magical abilities, allowing you to give yourself buffs, summon companions, or imbue your weapons with elemental effects.
Of course, Nioh 2 also features co-op multiplayer gameplay, which can again spice things up. Despite launching in 2021, Nioh 2 still has an active player base of around 3,800 players, with the all-time peak sitting at a respectable 41,325 players. At the time of writing, Nioh 2's Steam review rating is a healthy 88% positive, putting the game at "Very Positive" according to Steam's rating scale.
The Nioh 2 Complete Edition, which is the version currently discounted by 55%, packs the main game along with all three DLC expansions, giving you hours upon hours of challenging, rewarding gameplay at at just $22.49. Nioh 2 also has a Gold ProtonDB rating, meaning it will run well on Linux-powered machines, like the Valve Steam Deck (curr. $469.99 on Amazon).
