Crypt of the NecroDancer is a rhythm-based roguelite developed by Brace Yourself Games and published by Klei Entertainment in 2015. It follows the story of Cadence, who ventures into the mysterious crypt to uncover the fate of her missing father. However, the dungeon is cursed – anyone who enters must move and fight in sync with the beat. To lift the curse and find her father, Cadence must conquer her fears, battle monsters and ultimately confront the NecroDancer himself – all to the pulse of an electrifying soundtrack.
In Crypt of the NecroDancer, every move, attack and action must be timed to the beat. Players battle through procedurally generated dungeons, dodging enemies and learning their rhythm-based movement patterns. Each dungeon ends in a boss fight, complete with its own unique musical theme. The pulsating soundtrack, composed by Danny Baranowsky – known for Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac – drives the gameplay forward. Permanent upgrades and new gear add long-term motivation, both of which can be purchased using diamonds collected during runs. As the game progresses, players can unlock additional characters, each with their own unique mechanics and rules.
Reviews: Original concept with a high level of difficulty
The German gaming magazine 4Players reviewed Crypt of the NecroDancer and praised it for its inventive rhythm-based concept, strong replay value and a stellar soundtrack that perfectly complements the gameplay. The creatively designed boss battles and wide range of unlockable characters add plenty of variety. However, the review also noted the game’s steep difficulty curve, which can be frustrating – particularly for players who struggle with keeping rhythm. If you tend to lose the beat on the dance floor, this might not be your ideal dungeon crawler.
4Players gave Crypt of the NecroDancer a strong score of 8.5 out of 10. Steam users are equally enthusiastic, with 95% positive feedback from over 22,000 reviews. While the game scores slightly lower on Metacritic, the reception is still solid: it holds a Metascore of 87 and a User Score of 7.8.
