Rise of the Tomb Raider – developed and published by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal and Nixxes – launched in 2015 as the 11th entry in the iconic adventure series. Players once again step into the boots of Lara Croft as she ventures into the frozen wilderness of Siberia. Her goal: to find the lost city of Kitezh, rumored to hold the secret to eternal life. But she's not alone in the search – Lara must contend not only with the harsh environment but also with Trinity, a secretive organization that will stop at nothing to reach the prize first.
The game blends classic action-adventure gameplay with modern survival elements. Players explore semi-open environments, uncover hidden tombs, solve environmental puzzles and gather resources to upgrade gear and weapons. Whether sneaking past enemies, engaging in intense firefights or exploring ancient ruins, the game strikes a solid balance between stealth, combat and exploration. One of its standout features is the immersive world, featuring dynamic weather, lifelike wildlife and a consistently tense atmosphere.
The 20 Year Celebration Edition, released to mark the franchise’s 20th anniversary, includes the base game along with all DLCs. This content pack features the story-driven expansion Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch and the survival-focused Cold Darkness Awakens. A standout addition is Blood Ties, a playable flashback to Lara’s childhood, and Lara’s Nightmare, where players fend off a zombie invasion in Croft Manor. According to Xbox.com, the complete package offers over 50 hours of gameplay. The edition also includes classic Lara outfits and a costume from Tomb Raider II as a nod to the series' legacy.
Reviews: Diverse gameplay and expansive world
To earn a 90 in a review from GameStar, one of Germany’s leading gaming magazines, a game needs to deliver on many levels – and Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration clearly does. The action-adventure scores points with its well-balanced mix of climbing, puzzles, combat, stealth and exploration, all supported by a rewarding upgrade system, clear tutorials and plenty of side content. The expanded scope of the anniversary edition is also praised. Criticism is minimal and focuses mainly on slightly awkward controls and a storyline that doesn't go particularly deep.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is also highly rated across other platforms, especially on Steam, where it has received over 110,000 reviews – 94% of them positive. On Metacritic, the game holds a Metascore of 86 and a User Score of 7.9.
