Sony has only released one Xperia smartphone globally. Even then, the company has elected against offering the Xperia 1 VII in what were previously key markets like North America. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether Sony plans to return to Canada, the United States or other North American countries with new Xperia smartphones at this stage.
However, new findings by Sumaho Digest suggest that Sony is not finished with the Xperia series yet in other markets. Instead, it appears that the company is still actively developing a successor to last spring's Xperia 10 VI (curr. $389.99 on Amazon). As we discussed in April, Sony has set aside PM-1510-BV, PM-1511-BV, PM-1512-BV, PM-1513-BV, PM-1514-BV and PM-1515-BV model numbers for various Xperia 10 VII regional variants.
Now, the website Is this Phone Blocked? has identified the first of those as the Xperia 10 VII across Optus and Telstra network carriers. Moreover, the website reports that the unreleased device features 35009934 as the first eight digits of its IMEI, which is also known as a Type Allocation Code (TAC). Unfortunately, no equivalent for a new Xperia 5 can be found for the time being. Thus, it looks like Sony could be giving the Xperia 5 a miss for another generation.
Meanwhile, Sumaho Digest claims that is Sony is developing one of these as 'XQ-FE44', another identifier that will likely appear again in subsequent leaks. At this stage, Sony is rumoured to to be targeting October as the release month for its next mid-range smartphone. Specifications and and design changes from last year's model remain unknown for now, though.
