Since its initial release in 1996, the Tomb Raider franchise has become one of gaming’s most beloved and iconic franchises. Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 reboot of the series, aptly titled “Tomb Raider”, brought the series to the modern audience with beautiful visuals, engaging combat, exciting exploration, and an expertly crafted origin story for Lara Croft.
So, 2013’s Tomb Raider is the starting point for the modern Tomb Raider games and is a must-play for anyone looking to get into the franchise.
Thankfully, Steam has made getting into the modern Tomb Raider games rather easy, as all three mainline Tomb Raider titles are now on sale. This includes 2013’s Tomb Raider that can now be yours for just $2.24, an enormous 85% discount (linked at the end).
Tomb Raider (2013) nails the gameplay, exploration, and combat
Tomb Raider (2013) stands toe-to-toe with the likes of the Uncharted games as a third-person, action-adventure masterpiece focused on telling an impactful story. Lara Croft, the protagonist, is shipwrecked on the dangerous island of Yamatai. Inhabited by the violent Solarii Brotherhood, Lara finds herself battling against the cult using various tools, including a bow.
The combat of Tomb Raider revolves around stealth, hand-to-hand engagements, and shooting. However, it is not the main focus. Active combat takes a backseat to exploration and traversal, as Tomb Raider’s main gameplay loop focuses heavily on traversal like climbing, jumping across ledges, and more. This is where the game gets its comparisons with Sony Santa Monica’s Uncharted series from, as the latter also focuses heavily on traversal.
Staying true to the Tomb Raider heritage, the 2013 title also has dungeons to explore and archaeological treasures to find. The Yamatai island is dotted with hidden dungeons that hide secrets that the players will have to uncover by solving puzzles.
Suffice to say, for people who love archaeology, mysteries, and exploration, Tomb Raider is a true action-adventure title, falling in the same category as the excellent Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. According to IGN’s original review, the game is “well-written, sympathetic, exciting, beautiful, and just incredibly well-made”.
