The OnePlus Nord caused a stir upon release last year, as it marked a return for OnePlus to selling a well-equipped mid-range smartphone at an attractive price. Unsurprisingly, the OnePlus Nord proved popular, so it should come as no surprise to hear that OnePlus plans to release a successor in 2021.
According to Android Central, the new OnePlus Nord will simply be called the OnePlus Nord 2. However, its name belies the differences that apparently exist between it and the OnePlus Nord. Apparently, OnePlus has favoured MediaTek this year and will not equip the OnePlus Nord 2 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, as it did with the OnePlus Nord and the Snapdragon 765G. Clearly, OnePlus sees something in the Dimensity 1200 that it has not in the Snapdragon 775G.
Instead, Android Central understands, OnePlus has built the Nord 2 around the MediaTek Dimensity 1200, a 6 nm SoC that supports 5G. Additionally, the Dimensity 1200 has four ARM Cortex-A78 cores, of which one can reach 3 GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores restricted to a 2 GHz maximum clock speed. The SoC also possesses an ARM Mali-G77 GPU.
Android Central adds that the OnePlus Nord 2 will arrive in Q2 2021. We imagine that OnePlus will allow a few months of breathing room between the launch of the OnePlus 9 series and the OnePlus Nord 2 though, so we may not see the latter until late May or early June. We should also stress that OnePlus was believed to have equipped the Nord with a MediaTek Dimensity SoC too, before an apparent last-minute switch to the Snapdragon 765G. Hence, we would recommend awaiting further information
