At this point, it is abundantly clear that the recently-launched OnePlus Nord CE is not the OnePlus Nord successor that everyone's been waiting for. We will get a proper sequel in the form of the OnePlus Nord 2 sometime in July 2021. Previous reports told us that it would be the first-ever OnePlus-branded smartphone to run a MediaTek chipset. Similar rumours emerged online before the original OnePlus Nord's launch, so it's a bit difficult to take them seriously. However, new evidence suggests that the OnePlus Nord 2 will indeed pack a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC.
Twitter leaker @StuffListings stumbled upon the OnePlus Nord 2 running the aforementioned chipset on the AI Benchmark database. It doesn't divulge a lot about the smartphone's specifications, other than the fact that one variant will feature 8GB of RAM. AI Benchmark usually mentions if a device in its database is a prototype running pre-release firmware. Interestingly enough, the OnePlus Nord 2 in question here doesn't seem to be designated as such. Therefore, we should treat this information with scepticism until we hear more from official sources.
Initially, the OnePlus Nord was speculated to run Qualcomm's yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 775G chipset. We have a decent idea about its specifications, thanks to a leak from earlier. While it appears to be a good chipset in its own right, it pales compared to the Dimensity 1200, which trades blows with Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865. If it is priced right, the OnePlus Nord 2 can disrupt the smartphone market like the original OnePlus smartphones of the yesteryears.
