Cassel Games has just pushed Ratopia into its 1.0 launch, and the city-building survival sim is now available at a discounted price of $15.99, down from $19.99. The offer will run until May 14, and there’s a demo up on Steam if you’d rather try before you buy.
Ratopia features economy-focused colony sim mechanics with survival elements and a charming pixel art style. You’ll be building underground cities, managing jobs and housing, and setting up tax policies to keep your "ratizens" productive. Every citizen has their own wealth and stats, and a huge part of the gameplay is just making sure your economic system doesn’t fall apart while sending squads on expeditions to uncover ancient remains or face off against apex predators.
The full version comes after a long early access period and currently sits with an "87% Very Positive" rating from over 3,000 players. Reviews in the last 48 hours have dipped slightly to 78%, likely due to early 1.0 bugs or balance issues. That said, Ratopia has a strong following and the developers are still actively pushing updates.
On the technical side, the game runs on Windows and macOS, and doesn’t demand much in terms of hardware - just 2GB of space, 512MB of VRAM, and anything from Windows 7 onward (though Win10+ is now required for Steam itself).
If colony sims with deep management systems are your thing, and you don't mind a few rodents in charge of civilization, Ratopia's worth a look. There’s a demo, the full version is cheaper until next week, and it’s already had a lower recorded price once before ($14.99).
