Fallout New Vegas: Ultimate Edition can be purchased for just $7.99 on GOG. That gets you the game and four pieces of DLC, all of which can easily keep you entertained for weeks on end.

The Fallout TV show's breakaway success has shone light on the franchise once again. Fallout 76 continues to get updates to the day, and Bethesda even gave Fallout 4 some fresh content not too long ago. But any hardcore Fallout fan will tell you both games pale in comparison to Fallout: New Vegas. There's an entire genre of YouTube videos breaking down why it is arguably one of the greatest role-playing games ever made, but you have to play it at least once to experience its true magic.

In Fallout: New Vegas, you play as the Courier, who makes up in the middle of nowhere after being shot in the head by a mysterious man. Your task is to hunt down the person who did it to you and exact your revenge. Sounds simple enough, right? Hardly. As you track your assassin, you stumble upon two factions fighting for control over the New Vegas area: the NCR (New California Republic) and the Caesar's Legion. And a dozen-odd other factions trying to carve a piece of the pie for themselves.

The main plot of Fallout: New Vegas is captivating enough, but the real magic lies in its open world. Every town has a new story to tell, and the number of things you can do in the Mojave are frankly overwhelming and impossible to get done it one play through, at least without a guide. There are numerous, intricate, interconnected questlines that affect how your game ends, while there are other trivial, meme-tier errands that make you wonder why you did them in the first place.

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition comes with four pieces of DLC: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road. Each one brings a quirky twist to the universe and gives you something to make your main story's progression easier. And like the base game, the DLCs also have their own separate endings, all influenced by the choices you make. The possibilities are infinite, and it will take you at least a dozen playthroughs to experience them all.

As a part of GOG's Good Old Game's program, it gets some quality-of-life improvements that make it run marginally better on modern-day hardware. The original Fallout: New Vegas was notorious for its bugs, some of which persist to this date, with many considering them to be a core part of the New Vegas experience. Obsidian did, after all, MacGyver it all in record-breaking time.

Ideally, your first experience should be an unmodded one, but some fixes are an absolute necessity; otherwise you'll end up with a frustrating number of crashes. Viva New Vegas is an excellent set of mods that preserves the core Fallout: New Vegas experience while removing some of its quirks. You can read more on how to install it here.

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition can be bought for $7.99 on GOG. That's an excellent price for what easily sums up to hundreds of hours of entertainment. With the GOG version, you don't have to worry about DRM because you get an offline installer that you can play anywhere.
