For fans of tactical shooters who view single-player campaigns as a bonus rather than a priority, Steam has a tempting offer right now: Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, often cited as one of the stronger entries in the genre, is currently heavily discounted, available for around $1.30 as part of the Wargames Fest.

In Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, players take on the role of soldiers in the Vietnam War, fighting for either the U.S. or North Vietnamese forces. The game stands out for its focus on asymmetrical warfare – with the U.S. Army wielding superior firepower through helicopters and artillery, while the North Vietnamese rely on guerrilla tactics and elaborate tunnel systems. The combination of authentic map design and an intense, immersive soundscape helps create a battlefield atmosphere that few shooters manage to replicate.

Rising Storm 2 skips a single-player campaign entirely, focusing instead on large-scale multiplayer battles with up to 64 players. Matches unfold across sprawling maps that range from dense jungles and bombed-out cities to chaotic hilltops. You won’t find modern shooter comforts like minimaps, crosshairs or auto-healing here – the game leans heavily into immersion and realism. Weapons behave authentically and the short time to kill makes every decision count. Victory depends on teamwork, communication and class-based coordination. Commanders assign objectives, radio operators call in artillery strikes and machine gunners provide cover, while helicopter pilots ferry reinforcements into hot zones. That commitment to realism, however, comes with a steep learning curve that can be tough for new players to overcome.

Reviews: Intense shooter gameplay with a steep learning curve

Developed by Antimatter Games and Tripwire Interactive, Rising Storm 2: Vietnam was released in May 2017. At launch, the German gaming magazine GameStar reviewed the shooter and praised its demanding gameplay and strong emphasis on teamwork. With clearly defined roles, each class plays a specific part in helping the team succeed. The carefully crafted maps and intense, unsettling sound design further reinforce the game’s gritty atmosphere, delivering a sense of war that few other games capture so convincingly.

The main criticism aimed at Rising Storm 2 revolves around its steep learning curve. The game offers little in the way of tutorials or guidance, and with no single-player mode to ease players in, newcomers are thrown straight into the deep end of competitive multiplayer. This creates a high barrier to entry that can be discouraging, especially for those unfamiliar with the genre. On the technical side, the game shows its age. The visuals are noticeably dated and features like destructible environments are completely absent. However, many of the bugs and sound issues that drew criticism at launch have since been addressed through a series of updates, improving overall stability and performance.

Despite its shortcomings, GameStar gave Rising Storm 2: Vietnam a solid 80 out of 100 in its review, praising its depth and team-focused gameplay. The reception across other platforms has been similarly positive. On Metacritic, the game holds a Metascore of 81 and a User Score of 7.6. Over on Steam, it fares even better, with 87% of more than 40,000 user reviews rating it positively – a testament to its enduring appeal among fans of tactical shooters.

95% discount on Steam

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam normally sells for around $25 on Steam, but during the Wargames Fest, it’s available at a big 95% discount – bringing the price down to under $1.30 until May 5. For those looking to get the full experience, the Complete Bundle includes all released DLCs (excluding the Green Army Men upgrade) and is currently offered at 80% off, priced just under $19. According to SteamDB, this is the first time the game has returned to this price point since fall 2024, making such deep discounts a rare opportunity.
