The Epic Game Store has outlined new plans for its storefront after revealing a fresh set of game giveaways yesterday. Incidentally, Thursday's announcement coincided with refreshes of its Android, iOS and PC free game programs. Meanwhile, it looks like Fortnite will be returning to iOS next week in the US too.
On top of that, Epic Games Store has decided to reduce its commission for app developers. In a press release, the company has confirmed that the first $1 million earned in app revenue will be subject to 0% commission. The threshold will apply per app per year too, rather than across all apps published by a single developer on the platform. By contrast, Apple and Google take approximately 15% in fees from app revenue below $1 million.
From that value upwards, Epic Games will then absorb 12% of revenue generated compared to 30% for Apple and Google. Also, Epic has revealed early details about hosting webshops for developers. Apparently, these webshops will be capable of providing out-of-app purchases to circumvent the in-app purchase fees that the likes of Apple and Google put on developers. To incentivise usage of these webshops, Epic will provide gamers with 5% back in Epic Rewards on all purchases. All these changes are slated to go live in June; please see Epic Games' press release for more information.
