New iPhone SE set for Q1 2022 launch, will continue with iPhone 8 design cues but pick up an A15 and 5G
Apple is set to launch a refreshed iPhone SE in the first quarter of 2022 according to Taiwanese research company TendForce. The new model will continue with the classic, but ancient, design of the current model which itself is based on the iPhone 8, which dates back to 2017. This means a continuation of a 4.7-inch IPS LCD display, large bezels, and Touch ID. However, the drawcard for Apple’s iPhone SE line has been that it usually features a higher-end Apple A-series SoC.
The current iPhone SE was launched in 2020 and features an Apple A13 Bionic that powered its iPhone 11 range including the iPhone 11 Pro models. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the new iPhone SE will be powered by the Apple A15 Bionic found in the current iPhone 13 series. This would make it easily the most powerful mid-range handset on the market when it launches, despite its old-school looks.
Further, TrendForce expects the next-generation iPhone SE to be fitted with 5G connectivity further cementing Apple iPhones sales in 2022:
In terms of product development, Apple is staying with the plan to release its third-generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22. The third-generation iPhone SE is expected to be a major instrument in helping Apple establish a presence in the market segment for mid-range 5G smartphones. Its production volume for 2022 is forecasted to reach 25-30 million units.
Time will tell of course, but iPhone SE fans can expect a solid upgrade in terms of performance when it arrives.
