New affordable standalone 4G smartwatch launches with unusual camera mechanism

Rollme has listed a new 4G Android smartwatch called the Matrix. The listing went up on the company's own store on September 22, priced at $89.99. Both colorways, Midnight Black and Dawn Gold, are currently marked as sold out, and Rollme has not given a shipping date yet.

The Matrix has a squarish design, and it features a 2.06-inch AMOLED display with a 410 x 502 resolution. A Unisoc SL8541E chip runs the watch, and it also comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. Rollme doesn't say which Android version it ships with. Users can still install apps directly on the watch, though.

The camera is the unusual part. Instead of the fixed lens or the rotating module we saw on the Hero C2, the Matrix hides its camera in the side of the case. It slides out when needed for photos and video calls. Rollme has not listed a resolution for it.

Calls work two ways. The watch can pair with a phone over Bluetooth, or run on its own with a SIM card in its standalone slot. Rollme lists 2G, 3G and a spread of 4G LTE bands, including B12, B17, B20 and B28 on FDD and B38 to B41 on TDD. Wi-Fi, GPS and a geomagnetic compass essentially round out the connectivity.
