Moore’s Law Is Dead was the first leaker to reveal the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) in detail before the debut of the PS5 Pro. In May 2025, the leaker reported that Sony was developing PSSR2 to achieve better image quality using fewer resources. MLID has now alleged some more details regarding PSSR2.
The leaker claims that the PSSR2, which is internally referred to as the Mult-Frame Super Resolution 2 or MFSR2, uses a new algorithm and brand new APIs. PSSR2 reportedly aims to deliver huge image quality improvements over PSSR while reducing “GPU processing time” and using less memory. MLID’s source alleges that PSSR2 is not just a minor “0.5” update but a “huge” one.
Sony is seemingly so serious about fixing PSSR issues that it allegedly has developed more tools for PSSR than AMD has for FSR 3 or FSR 4.
To put the potential image quality enhancements of PSSR2 in context, MLID explains that PSSR-to-PSSR2 could be a similar jump to FSR 3-to-FSR 4. FSR 4 is a monumental upgrade over FSR 3 that fixes almost all its major issues, bringing AMD’s image upscaler on par with DLSS. Assuming PSSR2 brings a similar level of improvement, PS5 Pro owners are in for a treat when the technology launches in 2026.
Finally, MLID’s source also confirmed that PSSR remains separate from FSR. So, in addition to PSSR2, the PS5 Pro remains on track to get FSR 4 support in 2026.
This “free performance upgrade” is quite a good news for PS5 Pro owners, as PS6 isn't going to be here anytime soon. Moreover, the incessant increase in the price of RAM has now made it practically impossible to build a gaming PC more powerful than the PS5 Pro without spending well above $1,000.
