The Apple AirTag can be tracked worldwide via Apple's "Find My" network and has a battery life of approximately one year. The Elevation Lab TimeCapsule replaces the AirTag's coin cell battery with two AAA batteries, which are expected to provide a battery life of five years.

In December 2024, Elevation Lab introduced a TimeCapsule for the Apple AirTag that promised a ten-year battery life, but it was relatively large due to its use of two AA batteries. Now, the manufacturer is releasing a new model that uses two smaller AAA batteries instead.

This reduces the case size by half, but also halves the battery life to five years, which is still five times longer than the standard CR2032 lithium coin cell battery that typically powers the Apple AirTag. For optimal battery life, Elevation Lab recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries; alkaline batteries should be avoided, as their higher self-discharge rate and slightly lower voltage mean that rechargeable batteries will likely result in a shorter battery life.

In addition to its significantly longer battery life, TimeCapsule has another advantage: its case is IP69 certified and so should withstand drops into water, whereas an AirTag is typicall only IP67 certified. This means that an AirTag in a TimeCapsule is also suitable for tracking wet luggage on boats.

Price and availability

The Elevation Lab TimeCapsule for the Apple AirTag is available in the manufacturer's online store for $19.99.

The older version of the TimeCapsule has a runtime of 10 years, but is also significantly larger due to its use of two AA batteries.
