The NIU SQi, an electric bicycle, has launched in China. The vehicle has a top speed of 25 kph (~16 mph), legally making it an electric bike even though it looks very similar to a motorbike. The SQi has an assistance range of up to 75 km (~47 miles) from a 1,152 Wh battery. Features of the e-bike include support for Siri voice commands, NFC unlocking and GPS tracking.

The NIU SQi is a new motorcycle-style e-bike. While the electric vehicle may look like a motorbike with an elongated seat and bulky frame, the SQi is legally classified as an e-bike in China, which you can power with pedals and assistance from a motor. Two versions of the bicycle are included in the series, the entry-level SQi Urban Edition and the SQi Power Edition, which has a larger battery for a more extended assistance range.

The 400 W rear hub motor provides an assisted speed of up to 25 kph (~16 mph). A 48 V detachable lithium battery is available in 960 WH (20 Ah) and 1,152 Wh (24 Ah) options. These provide 65 km (~40 miles) and 75 km (~47 miles) of range, respectively, and take five to six hours to charge fully. The bikes weigh around 50 kg (~110 lbs) overall. A built-in display shows your speed and the battery charge level.

The NIU SQi is fitted with a retro-looking circular LED headlight, which automatically adjusts according to detected light levels. You can connect your smartphone to the bicycle, allowing you to control various settings via an app, track its location via GPS and view information such as battery charge level. You can also use Siri voice commands to control the bike when paired with an iPhone.

Other features of the electric bike include Bluetooth and NFC unlocking, a battery movement alarm and a USB charging port. You can buy the NIU SQi in China starting from RMB 8,999 (~US$1,334). It is currently unclear whether or when the vehicle could launch in other markets.
