The smartwatch maker Mobvoi has announced a new product in what will be a new category for this brand. It is an "infinitely spliceable" series of panel-like LEDs that can be arranged into a wall-mounted display and adjusted or added to with new modules as the user sees fit. However, unlike more established brands in this industry, each Cololight unit has only 1 shape: hexagonal.
Mobvoi claims that they can still be made to form a wide range of innovative shapes and patterns, including (but not limited to) sunflowers, punctuation marks and holiday symbols. It also claims that a display, once completed, will fit together seamlessly without dark patches or borders where the modules meet, thanks to the Cololight's design, connector and stand, which also acts as a hub for a given array.
Consequently, the resulting light-shows can be either wall-mounted or use this hub as a stand. Mobvoi has also stated that these displays will be programmable in terms of the colors or patterns of light required thanks to their 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, and will also be responsive to voice-commands via Google Assistant integration. However, as with many other similar products, it may require a lot of modules to get the desired effect.
On that note, the new Mobvoi Cololight start off in 2 SKUs: Pro Kit or Pro Gift. The former includes 3 lights, a plastic stand, a master controller unit and 2 connectors, whereas the latter has 6 lights, a stand made of stone and all the accessories necessary to connect them. They currently go for US$59.99 or $79.99 on Mobvoi's website.
