Apple and Microsoft have spent thousands of dollars putting each other's products down in commercials for more than a decade now. Infamously, Apple ran its 'Get a Mac' commercials between 2006 and 2009 with its 'Hello I'm a Mac and I'm a PC' introductions that featured actors like John Hodgman, Justin Long, David Mitchell, Robert Webb and the comedic duo the Rahmens in Japan.
More recently, Microsoft released a parody of an iPad Pro commercial for its Surface Pro 4, while the internet ridiculed Apple for its 'What's a Computer' iPad Pro advert. One such 'What's a Computer' meme has over 2.5 million views on YouTube at the time of writing.
Microsoft has now released a new 30 second commercial for its Surface Go during which a 10-year old girl sings to her grandma about how much she wants the device for Christmas to the tune of 'Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer' by Elmo & Patsy. The first few lines of Microsoft's jingle are as follows:
Grandma don't run out and buy an iPad, [it was] fine when I was 6 but now I'm 10. My dreams are big, so I need a real computer...
Cold. Setting aside the idea that most grandparents can afford and should buy a US$400 tablet for a 10-year old, the commercial is a shameless swipe at Apple and its success with the iPad. Watch the full video below and let us know what you think in the comments.
