We have previously reported that the current 8th-generation Surface Laptop 15 is better with an Intel processor. Nevertheless, our testing highlighted several shortcomings. The biggest issue remains the single-fan cooling system, which has been carried over unchanged from the previous model. While this system was sufficient for the power-efficient Lunar Lake processor (with a maximum power draw of 37 watts), the new Panther Lake processors require better cooling performance.
Although Microsoft has raised the short-term TDP limit to 65 watts, the device can only sustain this level briefly before dropping to 35 watts. This impacts not only the processor's multi-core performance but also graphics performance, as the fast Arc B390 requires slightly more than 40 watts to reach its full potential. Essentially, Microsoft has installed a new processor without making the necessary adjustments to the cooling system.
Enhanced cooling would also benefit the Snapdragon model. An optimized system would allow for the use of the significantly faster Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme. Competitors such as the Dell XPS 16 and Lenovo ThinkPad X9-15p gain a noticeable performance advantage with the same Intel processor. Another issue concerns the 65-watt power adapter, which is simply insufficient during high workloads. Consequently, the system is forced to constantly draw power from the battery during peak load sitiations to compensate for the deficit. This problem cannot be resolved by using a more powerful power adapter, either; even with a 140-watt adapter, the device's power draw remains capped at 62 watts.
The next issue is the wasted space inside the laptop. There would easily have been room for a more robust cooling system, a larger battery, and a standard M.2 2280 SSD. Microsoft could certainly have included more ports as well. All in all, this means that the aforementioned competitors from Dell and Lenovo simply offer a better overall package. To remain competitive in the future, Microsoft urgently needs to address these issues.
