Microsoft has crippled the ability of some Surface Pros and Surface Laptops to fully charge due to a bad UEFI update released on August 7, 2025. Affected laptops cannot charge fully, with no fix announced. Owners who have not yet received the update should consider pausing Windows updates.
After the August 7th UEFI update was released, users began posting about their inability to fully charge their Surface computers in the Microsoft Q&A forum and in the Microsoft Feedback app in Windows. Affected models that have been reported to have this problem include the Qualcomm Snapdragon X-powered Surface Pro (11th edition) and Surface Laptop (7th edition). These computers are unable to charge past 50%, incapacitating mobile workers who lack access to AC sockets from working all day long.
Microsoft is looking into the issue, but like the SSD problem introduced with the August 12th monthly update to Windows, neither issue has a fix available.
