Tesla seems to be gunning for the “Matte black everything crowd,” as the Cybertruck takes to the street in what appears to be a matte black wrap. This indicates once again that Tesla may offer coloured wraps for the Cybertruck right out the gate. This may be the first serious Cybertruck colourway we've seen so far, after Tesla poked fun at Ford and Toyota.

The Tesla Cybertruck has been spotted a number of times in different wraps — from digital camouflage to tongue-in-cheek Toyota Tacoma and Ford F-150 Lightning jobs. More recently, however, Tesla's lead designer Franz von Holzhausen, was spotted driving a matte black-wrapped Cybertruck by @AtomAntEater on X (fka Twitter) — perhaps offering the most marketable wrap to date.

Speculation about the wraps has gone in two different directions. While the various wraps, along with the recent US debut of Model 3 and Y wraps, could indicate that Tesla will offer first-party Cybertruck wraps from the factory, Tesla could also be using the colourful vinyl to cover up the Cybertruck's flaws.

Matte black as a wrap would be a rather apt choice to hide any potential production blemishes, because, although the texture picks up fingerprints rather quickly, the flat colour would likely hide minor defects in the surface or finish of the Cybertruck.

A follow-up video shared by @Greggertruck on X (fka Twitter) reveals close-up shots of the matte black Cybertruck, with the most uniform looking body panels seen so far on a pre-production unit, indicating that the matte black is doing a good job hiding imperfections.

What is curious, however, is that a commenter mentions under the tweet that they also saw the Cybertruck in person, adding that the panel gaps were "huge" — perhaps indicating that Tesla still needs to work on the assembly line's accuracy.

While it's still unclear if Tesla will offer wraps from the factory, the material would likely be easier and cheaper to apply than a traditional vehicle, since the majority of the Cybertruck is made of flat panels, lacking any of the complex curves seen in modern car design.

Elon Musk has confirmed that the Cybertruck will start shipping to customers as of November 30, 2023, which is when the company plans to hold the delivery event.
