Mate 50 RS launches as the latest Porsche Design x Huawei flagship smartphone
The Huawei Mate RS series is Porsche Design's annual chance to flex its muscles in terms of smartphone finishing. Now, the partners have teamed up again to produce the 50 series' top-end SKU. Then again, the premium-tier phablet does not look a lot different from its 40 RS predecessor, apart from the new stove-top rear camera lens arrangement.
Nevertheless, Porsche Design claims to have developed a new "CeraBicolor" two-color ceramic process that lends a bluish tint to the 50 RS' black colorway and a purplish one to its white version. It has the same 6.74-inch 120Hz display as the 50 Pro, with a 300Hz touch-sampling rate and 1,440Hz PWM dimming on the other side.
The HarmonyOS-based 50 RS also has virtually the same rear camera hump as the Pro (variable aperture tech and all), except the RS has a 48MP f/3.0 telephoto camera with OIS where the Pro has a 64MP shooter. Huawei also rates it for 100x digital zoom.
The 50 RS has a 4,700mAh battery that charges at the 66W standard Huawei has stuck with for the last few years. has just 1 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4G-powered SKU with 512GB of internal storage - oddly, Huawei does not reveal its RAM specs anywhere.
Nevertheless, the single option has been priced at no less than 12,999 yuan (or US$1,869: even more than a Mate Xs 2) in China, with general sales to start on September 21, 2022.
