Huawei has announced the Mate Xs 2, a return to the wraparound design that the company pioneered with the Mate X and Mate Xs. The Mate Xs 2 features a Snapdragon 888 4G chipset and four cameras, including a punch-hole selfie camera. Huawei sells the Mate Xs 2 in three colours, three memory configurations and two battery sizes, starting at CNY 9,999 (~US$1,509).

Huawei has lifted the lid on the Mate Xs 2, its latest foldable smartphone and the flagship device from today's hardware event. As its name suggests, the Mate Xs 2 builds on the Mate Xs, rather than being a Mate X2 successor. Accordingly, the Mate Xs 2 has a single wraparound display, rather than exterior and interior displays like the Mate X2 and the Galaxy Z Fold3.

While Huawei has returned to a previous design, the Mate Xs 2 contains several changes from the Mate Xs, and the Mate X by extension. For one, the Mate Xs 2 is smaller than its predecessors at 156.5 x 139.3 x 5.4 ~ 11.1 mm when unfolded. In comparison, the Mate X and Mate Xs measure 161.3 x 146.2 x 5.4 mm when unfolded. Also, the Mate Xs 2 is a few millimetres narrower than its predecessors when folded at 75.5 mm.

According to Huawei, the Mate Xs 2's display measures 7.8-inches when unfolded and 6.5-inches when folded. The company adds that it has used an OLED panel again, but one that reaches 120 Hz with 1,440 Hz PWM dimming, 240 Hz touch sampling and an expanded resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels. Incidentally, the display operates at 2,480 x 1,176 pixels when folded.

Perhaps surprisingly, Huawei has paired the Mate Xs 2 with a Snapdragon 888 4G chipset, not the Kirin 900 or an equivalent. For some reason, the Mate Xs 2 has a punch-hole front-facing camera, as well as three rear-facing sensors. Specifically, Huawei's website states that the Mate Xs 2 has 50 MP primary, 13 MP ultra-wide-angle and 8 MP telephoto rear-facing cameras, although only the latter appears to be optically stabilised (OIS).

The Mate Xs 2 is already orderable in China, where it will ship with HarmonyOS 2. Currently, Huawei offers the handset in three colour options and three memory configurations, starting at CNY 9,999 (~US$1,509) with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Confusingly, Huawei has equipped the 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage variant with a larger battery, which it also markets as a Collector's Edition. The Mate Xs 2 comes in the following configurations:

  • 8 GB of RAM/256 GB of storage (4,600 mAh) - CNY 9,999 (~US$1,509)
  • 8 GB of RAM/512 GB of storage (4,600 mAh) - CNY 11,499 (~US$1,735)
  • 12 GB of RAM/512 GB of storage (4,880 mAh) - CNY 12,999 (~US$1,962)
