MSI's wild 5K 180Hz mini LED monitor reportedly shelved indefinitely

MSI has reportedly put the MPG 271KRAW18 on hold indefinitely, shelving one of the more ambitious Mini LED gaming monitors shown at this year's Computex. The 27-inch display combined a native 5K resolution with a 180Hz refresh rate, a spec pairing no shipping monitor currently offers, and it now looks unlikely to reach retail on its original timeline.

MSI was reportedly targeting an early January 2027 release, although pricing had not been finalized. The hold comes shortly after MSI launched a different 27-inch 5K Dual Mode gaming monitor with a 300Hz mode, the MAG 271KPD7, which switches between a native 5K at 75Hz and WQHD at 300Hz. That model is a separate, lower-tier product from the shelved MPG 271KRAW18, lacking Mini LED backlighting and topping out at DisplayHDR 400 rather than DisplayHDR 1400.

The MPG 271KRAW18 used a 27-inch Rapid IPS panel at a native 5120x2880 resolution, translating to a 218 PPI pixel density and roughly 77% more pixels than a 4K panel of the same size. Its dual-mode feature let it switch down to 2560x1440 at up to 330Hz for faster-paced gaming, giving users a choice between resolution and refresh rate on the same screen rather than compromising on one.

Backing that panel was a 2,304-zone Mini LED backlight paired with a Quantum Dot layer and a glossy coating, a less common choice for Mini LED gaming monitors, which mostly ship with matte finishes. MSI rated the display at more than 1,400 nits of peak brightness with VESA DisplayHDR 1400 certification, 98% DCI-P3 color coverage, a Delta E of under 2 for factory color accuracy, and a 0.5ms gray-to-gray response time.

For connectivity, the monitor featured DisplayPort 2.1 with full UHBR20 bandwidth at 80Gbps, alongside HDMI 2.1 and a USB Type-C port supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode and 98W of power delivery. That represented a jump from the monitor's earlier form, when it was shown as the MPG 271KRAW16 with a 165Hz refresh rate and a slower UHBR13.5 DisplayPort connection. 

Gigabyte showed a similarly specced 27-inch 5K 180Hz Mini LED monitor at Computex, the FM275K16P, which uses the same 2,304-zone backlight count but features a lower DisplayHDR 1000 rating and adds a 4K 220Hz mode. MSI has not confirmed the delay or given a reason for it.
