The XPS 15 is Dell’s premier ultrabook that pairs fast hardware with an almost edge-to-edge display. Although the XPS 15 devices are excellent machines, as shown by our testing of the older Dell XPS 15 9520 and the 9500 models, they are expensive at full retail. Fortunately, Best Buy has now discounted the 2023 Dell XPS 15 9530 by US$200 for a limited time (via slickdeals). The final price of US$999.99 is a 120-day low rate for the machine per Honey’s price history tool.
The Dell XPS 15 9530 SKU on sale packs a 13th gen Core i7-13700H with 14 cores and 20 threads, an Intel Arc A370M discreet GPU, 16 GB of DDR5-4800 memory, and 512 GB of SSD storage. Additionally, the laptop features a narrow-bezel 15.6-inch FHD+ display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and an advertised 500 nits of brightness. So on paper, the laptop looks very solid hardware-wise.
Fortunately, the Dell XPS 15 9530 is also excellent in use as we found out in our review. We gave the RTX 4070, Core i7-13700H, and 3.5K OLED-equipped variant a “very good” rating of 90%. Granted, the variant on sale is significantly less powerful than the one we reviewed, but the general points about the relatively portable chassis, speedy CPU performance, and strong battery life still stand.
The Core i7-13700H appeared 10% faster than the Core i7-12700H featured inside last year’s XPS 15 9520 in our review. Furthermore, we measured 8 hours of endurance in our WLAN test. The battery life should be comfortably better on the discounted SKU, as it packs a less powerful GPU and a lower-resolution display.
Disappointingly, the Arc A370M is nothing to write home about. It matches the NVIDIA GeForce MX570 in the 3DMark Time Spy Graphics benchmark making the Arc GPU insufficient for modern gaming. If you are looking for a budget laptop that can also game, take a look at the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus which is also enjoying a significant rate cut.
