At the heart of Middle-earth: Shadow of War is Talion, a Gondorian ranger who shares a spirit bond with the elven master smith Celebrimbor. Together, they forge a new Ring of Power and take the fight to Mordor. Players build their own orc army, conquer fortresses and battle Sauron’s forces. Talion leads the fight firsthand, engaging in fast-paced combat that combines acrobatic melee attacks, magic and powerful abilities. By upgrading his gear and skills, players can tailor their playstyle to their preferences.
A standout feature is the Nemesis System, which creates procedurally generated orc leaders that evolve based on their encounters with the player. Each orc has unique strengths and weaknesses, remembers past battles with Talion and may even seek revenge. If a leader defeats the player, they rise through Mordor’s ranks and grow stronger. Talion, however, can turn the tide by recruiting fallen enemies into his own army, using them as spies or bodyguards.
