Lenovo has unveiled an external SSD designed to look like a hand grenade. The product's visual design pays tribute to the recently released Chinese military blockbuster Operation Dragon, also known as Operation Leviathan or Operation Hadal. The SSD's looks are what makes it unique, and it's also its looks that make it quite possibly the worst tech gift to give to a frequent traveler, as such a gadget is very likely to make security personnel very nervous.
The machine translation of the caption on the image below reads: “Lenovo Crowdfunding — Lifesaver Tactical Mobile Solid State Drive. Officially authorized hardcore aluminum alloy grenade shape. USB 3.2 high-speed protocol. Compatible with multiple specifications of SSD.” The Lenovo Legion and Operation Hadal logos are also visible.
Lenovo's official page on the crowdfunding platform suggests that the new grenade-shaped SSD could become a successful project. The campaign is currently 69% funded, with over three weeks remaining, and numerous reports in Chinese-language tech media giving this unusual product plenty of spotlight today.
Complete specifications for this 599-yuan (approximately $82), still-crowdfunding product are not yet available, apart from the details mentioned above. However, it is expected that the grenade-shaped external SSD will feature a 1TB capacity, data transfer speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s, and a USB Type-C interface. These assumptions are based on the specifications of Lenovo’s existing Legion portable SSD.
Lenovo hasn't shared any details on global availability, but the Samsung T9 is an alternative if you're looking for something that's already available in the international market (2TB curr. $169.99 on Amazon).
