Lenovo V17-IIL review: A quiet home office laptop with a good display

Lenovo's V series represents the entry level series into the business laptop segment. You can find simple office laptops that don't strain your budget too much and are thus suited for private as well as business users. The 17.3-inch model we are testing here is run by a Core i3-1005G1 processor and available for barely 600 Euros (~$729). The competitors include devices such as the HP 17 and the Asus Vivobook 17 F712.

Case and Equipment - The V17 does not offer USB-C
Lenovo uses a dark grey (Iron Grey) plastic case with matte, smooth surfaces. The top of the base unit is printed with a pattern that is supposed to simulate a discretely brushed surface. While the case shows good workmanship, it lacks stability. The base unit and lid can be warped too easily. This means that the laptop should be used in a fixed location on top of a flat surface. The battery is built-in, and you can access the insides after removing the bottom of the case.
The limited amount of connections consists of three USB-A ports (2x USB 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0), one HDMI port, and an audio combo port. The storage card reader belongs to the slower models (reference card: Angelbird SD Card AV PRO UHS-II 128GB V60), and SD cards cannot be fully inserted but stick out by about 16 mm (~0.6 in).
The WLAN chip (Intel AX201) supports the 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax standards and offers Bluetooth 5 functionality. The transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no additional WLAN devices in close proximity and close distance between laptop and Server PC) turn our very good.

Input Devices - The Lenovo laptop does not offer a keyboard illumination
Lenovo has equipped the V17 with a chiclet keyboard that does not offer any illumination. The keys, whose surface is only slightly rough, offer a short stroke and clear pressure point. While typing, the keyboard bounces back slightly. Overall, Lenovo has delivered a keyboard that is suitable for everyday tasks here.
The mouse replacement is a multitouch capable ClickPad (~10.5 x 7 cm, ~4.1 x 2.8 in) whose embedded keys also offer a short stroke and clear pressure point. The smooth pad surface allows fingers to slide easily. The ClickPad also responds to input in the corners.

Performance - The Core i3 runs at full speed
With the V17-IIL, Lenovo offers a simple 17.3-inch office laptop that is targeted toward private and professional users. The laptop offers sufficient computing performance for office and Internet applications.
Test Conditions
The laptop offers the three power profiles "Intelligent Cooling," "Highest Performance," and "Battery Saver" mode. You can switch between the profiles by using the "Fn" + "Q" key combination or via the preinstalled Lenovo Vantage software. We ran our test with the "Intelligent Cooling" mode activated. With this, the laptop already runs at full speed, and the "Highest Performance" mode does not offer any additional performance - but this might look different with other equipment configurations of the V17.
Processor
The Core i3-1005G1 dual-core processor (Ice Lake) runs at a basic clock speed of 1.2 GHz, which can be increased up to 3.4 GHz via Turbo. Hyper threading (two threads per core) is supported.
The processor runs through the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmarks at 3.4 GHz and the single-thread test at between 1.5 and 3.4 GHz. In battery operation, the clock speeds are at 1.6 GHz (multi-thread) and 1.2 to 1.6 GHz (single-thread).
We evaluate whether the CPU Turbo is used constantly in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmarks for at least 30 minutes in a constant loop. The CPU runs constantly at maximum speed.

System Performance
The system runs smoothly and well-rounded. We did not run into any problems. The processor used delivers sufficient performance for office and Internet applications. The results in the PCMark benchmarks turn out good.
The working memory (8 GB, DDR4-3200, 4 GB module + 4 GB onboard) runs in dual-channel mode. Lenovo limits the available maximum amount of working memory in the V17 series to 12 GB. Nonetheless, the devices also support larger capacities, and we were able to equip a model with a 32-GB module, which means that you can expand the storage up to 36 GB.

Storage Solution
A Samsung NVMe SSD (M.2-2242, but M.2-2280 models will also fit), which offers an overall capacity of 256 GB, serves as the system drive. Its transfer rates turn out good. While the laptop generally offers additional space for a 2.5-inch storage medium, we were unable to install the corresponding drive, since neither the necessary SATA slot nor an insertion frame were included.
An additional hint: If you consider replacing the SSD, you have to choose a model that does not have any elements on the side that faces the main board. Since there is a flat cable connection below the SSD, other models won't fit.

Emissions and Power Management - The Lenovo laptop hardly heats up
Noise Emissions
The 17.3-inch laptop does not produce a lot of noise. During idle operation and under low load, the fan usually remains turned off and there is complete silence. Under higher load, the fan only revs up a bit, and the maximum noise level is 33.4 dB(A).

Temperature
The CPU and GPU run through our stress test (Prime95 and Furmark running for at least one hour) at 2.4 to 2.5 GHz and 900 MHz respectively. The stress test represents an extreme scenario that does not occur like that in everyday operation. We use this test to evaluate whether the system also remains stable under full load.
The heat development is very limited. During the stress test, we register temperatures below 40 ºC (104 ºF) at all the measurement points. In everyday operation, the temperature values remain within the green range throughout.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.7 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 35.1 °C / 95 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.7 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.2 °C / 77.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.8 °C / 82 F (+2.6 °C / 4.6 F).
Speakers
While the stereo speakers produce a decent sound, there is hardly any bass. In addition, the maximum volume turns our relatively low.

Power Consumption
There is nothing conspicuous in terms of the power consumption of the Lenovo laptop. After all, there is only a frugal Core i3 processor inside. The values remain at a normal level of the hardware used here. The power supply is rated at 65 watts.

Verdict
Although Lenovo primarily targets small businesses with the V17-IIL, the devices should also find some buyers in the private as well as the business segments.
The Lenovo V17-IIL - a simple office laptop for stationary operation.
With a Core i3-1005G1 processor, 8 GB of working memory (dual-channel mode; 4 GB module + 4 GB onboard, max. 36 GB), and a 256-GB NVMe SSD, the laptop is well-equipped for office and Internet operation. A positive point: the CPU is able to run constantly at full power. Overall, the 17.3-inch laptop produces very little noise and there is hardly any heat development.
While the battery life would be quite okay, the fact that the case is not particularly robust prohibits mobile usage. It is best if the laptop remains stationary on a desk or other flat place. The display (FHD, IPS) scores with stable viewing angles, a matte surface, good color reproduction, and good color space coverage. The brightness and contrast fulfill the requirements. In addition, there is a keyboard well-suited for everyday typing tasks - but unfortunately without a keyboard illumination.
Price and Availability
The Lenovo V17-IIL in the tested configuration (Core i3-1005G1, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10 Home) is available in Germany for 599 Euros (~$727) from Notebooksbilliger.de. While the V17-IIL is currently unavailable from Lenovo in the US, it can be purchased from international vendors such as this, or alternative configurations are available under the "IdeaPad 3" label for example from BestBuy.com for ~$630.
